@Ed2 You didn't say what version was displayed prior to updating, so now I don't know if my suggestion to force the boot IOS to 249 will work.

To boot with IOS 249 you'd edit the meta.xml file with notepad. And remove the two lines that it tells you to.

the previous version was
v3.0 r1272 mod7

I just edited the meta.xml file with notepad and where it said bootios=58 I changed it to bootios=249 and saved but I still got the same error

Hi, sorry that I forgot to mention I did remove the -- line to enable arguments where it tells me to as blackbOx described
I still got the same error
is there anything else I should change in the loader?

Your hdd is formatted as fat32 right? You've tried both usb ports on the wiiu? You can try a Y-cable (splitter cable) so your hdd can get power from 2 USB ports. Or you can try a different hdd. Are using using an external hard drive or a small USB flash/thumb drive?

Yes, I have tried both, the other port gives me a waiting time, I'm using a small usb flash

So my cios are fine as I understand right? No need to mess with those?

My usb flash is indeed formatted fat32

Flash drives generally have poor compatibility. You can maybe improve compatibility by formatting it as wbfs using wii backup manager, instead of fat32. You lose many of the benefits of fat32, but it may get it working for u.

Better to just use a compatible hard drive (not a thumb drive) if possible

Edit: syscheck looks pretty decent

This might be a bit late to the party but my setup was working fine on my vWii until I connected the USB and SD into my Wii, then it didn't work on my WiiU anymore.
fortunately I had a backup which I was able to compare it to, so here is backed up meta.xml below

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<app version="1">
<name> USB Loader GX</name>
<coder>USB Loader GX Team</coder>
<version>3.0 r1281</version>
<release_date>20230107233054</release_date>
<arguments>
<arg>--ios=249</arg>
<arg>--bootios=58</arg>
<arg>--usbport=0</arg>
<arg>--mountusb=1</arg>
<arg>--sdmode=0</arg>
</arguments>

The ios had changed to 250
The usbport had changed to 2

Once I set this back it started again, it worked on my WiiU again
