It does not matter. I would prefer a USB-powered drive, since it saves you one power outlet.

However if you use the 2nd USB slot for the internet adaptor or a Rockband/Guitar Hero controller you might want the power from an outlet.

If you have an open power outlet that isn't used get one with a separate power supply.

I have tested successfully with a WD 120 (5400) that only used 1 USB port.
Not all USB-powered drives need 2 ports.
