The supreme court has ruled 6 to 3 that Trump's sweeping tariffs have no basis in law and are null and void. Writing for the majority opinion, chief Justice Roberts said that Trump must point to congressional authority granted to the presidency in order to impose tariffs "and he can't".
Trump has voiced his anger and begun to attack individual justices. He has also taken advantage of the trade act of 1974 to impose blanket 10% tariffs on the world. Those tariffs, however, are capped at 15% and have an expiration date at 150 days.
It remains to be seen what will happen to the 175 billion USD that was collected from tariffs, and the fate of this money will likely require years of litigation.
Trump is due to give his state of the union next week and the dismemberment of his key economic policy will likely be a central theme.
