Hardware Upgrading from i3 to i7 cpu

The problem with upgrading CPU on OEM computer is that whether the motherboard and PSU can handle the additional power draw. These motherboards and PSUs are made with low cost in mind.

Using Xeon CPU on desktop motherboard is not an issue. Desktop CPU are derived from server CPU after all.

According to the HP OEM page the CPU is upgradable.

Right now it has installed a 600 watt PSU and no issues since then.
Does it matter if the i7-870 CPU came from a mac desktop?
 
A quick google tells me that your motherboard is compatible with Lynnfield processors, which that Xeon is. I7-870 should have no problems.

600W, as long as it's actually 600W (I.e. Not a no-brand Chinese PSU), should have no problem with the upgrade.

I can't see any info on if transplanting a Mac Intel CPU to a standard desktop works or not. On the other hand, macs and pcs only differ in operating system these days, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Just make sure you upgrade your BIOS to the latest version to ensure maximum CPU compatability.

Can you look at that PSU label and tell me how many amperage (A) on +12 V?

Mac has long switched from PowerPC to x86. Using CPU interchangeably is not an issue.
 
12 V x 24 A = 288 W.

If you have no gaming GPU attach to it then its fine, otherwise it ain't enough.

When dealing with PSU, how much amperage on +12V rail is the most important factor. 85% of your PC power draw comes from this rail (CPU + GPU). You multiply voltage (12) to amperage to find out how much wattage can come out of a particular rail.
 
This is my current GPU and doesn't need to be connected to the PSU.

Ah. 7750 is fine. It draws maximum of 75 W from motherboard. That and CPU power draw will give a good headroom against 288 W ceiling.

In the future if you need to use more powerful GPU (ones that require separate connection to PSU), you most certainly need to upgrade your PSU.
