Update luma over ftp or universal updater?

Hi guys
My 3ds been collecting dust for the last little bit,
I wanted to update to the latest luma version but didn't know the best way to do it at this point.
I was thinking of just dropping the new files over via ftp or using universal updater to update to the latest version.
I thought i would ask first to be sure.
Yes I'm to lazy to take out the sd card and put it in my pc.

I had the same question because I didn't want to open the n3dsxl caseback.
