UMD to PSN program revealed

How does sony know, if a copy has been used before to redeem a discounted digital copy? Does each copy of a psp game have an unique code programmed into the disc?...If so it would seem sony had this planned out years ago in the event UMDs failed.

its pretty commonplace to attach a unique serial number to a piece of media

[quote/]What other solution do you have? Installed a clunky UMD reader on the Vita? Add an expensive UMD reader attachment?

If you're going to buy a Vita, redeem your games on your PSP first, then sell your PSP. The games are tied to your account, not to your system.

Also, paying for games you already own is not a foreign concept. It just so happens you get a discount this time.

On the flip side, you can probably buy a used UMD game cheap and redeem it for cheaper than you'd pay for the full game. Or if a friend doesn't want to be bothered with redeeming their UMDs, just use theirs.

You are a moron. Any of the Xbox originals you could download were all backwards compatible so your original copy would play if you stuck them in your 360 you didn't have to pay for them again. The downloadable versions were for people who never owned them. Same goes for the PS1 classics, every ps3 will play ps1 games. As for the Wii virtual console, it offers people retro games from almost every major 2D console of the 90s and late 80s with out all the problems that come with your old consoles such as blowing in cartridges, trying to make them work on your new TV, and not being able to save because the sram battery needs to be replaced. Also the Wii is backwards compatible with gamecube games.

As for a solution for the Vita, It should just give you a free download for the game, Not a damn discount

Of course the only game free is a game so obscure that even the one who collect every psp umd games doesn't know about it. :)

Anyway, it's not like I don't have a working psp to play my umd.

EDIT: I checked some info about the game free to transfer, it's actually good, reminds me of a flash game where you had ten mouse cursors with limited lifespan, but the action of all the previous cursors were kept for the next one (pressing a button etc...).

I thought only books, novels and comics were the only media with serial codes.

That's going to suck for resellers. (GameStop, individual sellers, etc.)

Well, I like UMDs but I am not going to buy Vita.. Lousy games as I read the list. I am delaying it until there are some games I really like. No hurry and money is a wise spend. I will focus on PS3 and Wii... Plenty games await for me with those consoles. No Vita and 3DS for me in few years from now.

So paying again for games you already own, and you need to keep your old PSP as well. Nice "solution" Sony. :\

They do this because they know we can reverse and debug their program easily. #Scared

Really though, logistically, PSP games lose their market value way quicker than PS3 or Xbox 360 games. In my honest opinion, I hope the discounts help the buyers more than Sony. The quality of their services are sub par, and I think Sony should keep reminding their customers they are dedicated to them.

Well, your games won't work on our system anymore... But here's a discount! GIVE US YOUR FUCKING MONEY!

But really, were there any PSP games that justify backwards compatibility?

You are a moron.

Great conversation starter.

You'll need a UMD compatible PSP for this process anyway, what's to stop you from keeping it?

As for the Wii virtual console, it offers people retro games from almost every major 2D console of the 90s and late 80s with out all the problems that come with your old consoles such as blowing in cartridges, trying to make them work on your new TV, and not being able to save because the sram battery needs to be replaced. Also the Wii is backwards compatible with gamecube games.

This offers you all the games you had on your PSP without the hassles of having them on a UMD, being forced to carry around a PSP, and allows you to use the game over multiple devices (it's tied to your PSN account so I could play this on my PSP Go if I wanted to, my Vita, even my older PSPs). Also, a newer remodeled Wii came out that isn't backwards compatible. Oh, and they still offer you "New Play Control" ports of Gamecube games, you just shake and waggle to them now.

As for a solution for the Vita, It should just give you a free download for the game, Not a damn discount

But that wouldn't make them money or cover the costs of doing all this. It also discourages people from just buying a used game and getting it for cheaper than the PSN price. Now if I wanted to but a $10 used game that would normally be worth $20 and I have to pay a $10 to transfer it, it wouldn't be worth buying the used game. It's a way to offer UMD owners a chance to keep their UMD games and discourage people from game "lending" and buying used, something all companies do nowadays.

I can't belive ... well actually I can belive you people are bitching about this. Look if you don't want to pay to play your PSP games on Vita then don't. At least Sony is trying to do something for the people who do. Me personally looking at the list of compatible games there is nothing in there that I want to transfere but if they add something I would I'm not going to go and complain about a few bucks so I can. Get over it.

FYI, the list I posted is only a starting list, more games will be added as time goes on. Presumably any game that's on the PSN that's also on a UMD is open range. This is also the Japanese list, IDK if there's a EU or US one floating around.

I know that Guild. Thats why I said if they would add something that I want to transfer I said I would pay the few bucks to do it. :ha:

Edit; I thought I saw a US or EU list some where.

Oh, alright, guess I misinterpreted ;)

Also, it seems, at launch, the passport system will support over 200 games from over 40 publishers.

I wonder if it will work with imported games? For example, I have several US games and several EU games for my US PSP which I use with the EU PSN Store. Will I only be able to get discounted copies of the EU games? Not that I intend on getting a Vita, but it might be handy to have games on my MS for my PSP instead of UMDs...

Doubtful, you'll probably need a PSN account of the same region to transfer PSP games of that region. That's just my guess though.

I would think that depends on if the PSN store for a different region is region locked. I don't know first hand but I would imagine that it is.

Ninja'd thanks Guild! :D
