UK shops are reporting a sharp increase in 3DS sales.

Sources on the High Street have told MCV that the Metallic Red edition is all but sold out, with other colours also in short supply.

It follows a surge in popularity for the machine, driven by two new Mario games and a price cut.

Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are both now available – the latter debuted at No.8 in this week's Chart-Track Top 40. Both games have been supported by a significant marketing drive, with TV ads appearing around prime time TV shows.

"We have high expectations for the final few weeks before Christmas," said GAME Group's category manager for Nintendo Iain Johnson.

I got one for Christmas then :v
But Twilight Princess was sold out so I was stuck with Wii Sports.

Edit: And with that said, I'm having much more fun with a Wii this time around (just bought one after lacking one for a couple of years). Guess it's a general rule with Nintendo consoles.

I'm not too surprised, you can get a 3DS for good prices now. I saw one for £120 in Sainsburys last week, I was tempted to pick up at that price.

So many games released it just the first 8 months...
The 3DS is going to make more sales in it's lifetime than the DS for sure!

Christmas, new high-profile games, it's a recipe for successful sales.
New Mario and Mario Kart, and Pokémon too, even a Sonic title.

You mean the one not everyone has played, that is still considered better than many newer games?

    Jumping the gun, much?

This is definitely good news for Nintendo, but it'll be interesting to see how it fairs next year (especially around the holiday season) when it faces competition from the Vita.
