yeah i have a feeling youd know where to look for one anyway if thats what you were after

you must know that astalasomething

Well...

If you dont mind lower compatibility and slower reading speeds then go for the soft mod.

However if youre familair with solding then soldering in a modchip is going to be a easy job. And now we even have the Wii-Clips

i just got Manhunt 2 , i'm gonna test it

softmod does not have lower compatibility any more, your a bit out of date

yes i know the site you mention.... i wont repeat even the little you did, might be ban worthy, lol.
And Yep softmod has reached equal compatibility with chips. the only exception being gamecube games and the 3x read speed... and those arnt far off if you read between the lines from a few posts from linkinworm and wiigator.

Hi there,

I've just bought a used Wii for my 9yr old nephew, its PAL region and currently running ver 3.1E.

Like most kids he's constantly scratching his discs so I want to mod his Wii to play backup discs.
Though I can tell him not to click yes to anything that asks him to update the console. There's a pretty good chance that's exactly what he'd do. It's not networked yet but may add online access in the future.

If I use the softmod method, it'll cost me approx £35 for a Zelda disc and a few quid for a SD card. Alterntively I've seen Modchips like the WiiKey 2 advertised for around £30 but that would mean having to break out the solder gun.

Hence, which method would be best suited to my needs and what benefits does one have over the other?

Also, if the Chip method is the best way to go, which is the best one for my needs... i.e. just playing backup discs and the occasional original disc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

It honestly depends.

Softmod is very excellent but if you provide online access, there's a good chance the kid could update something and something might go wrong, or worse, the Wii gets bricked. But the softmod is relatively easy to install and get it working, and there are a ton of guides (on GBAtemp) which tell you exactly what to do, along with support in case of issues.

Hardmod is what I prefer and it plays games for how it's meant to (fast speed, non-laggy). Also, I heard something about a Wii Clip which lets you install a mod chip solderless, so that might be worth looking into.

now the non laggy is just not fair.. none of my games lag at all, and aside from about 3 seconds load time there is no difference from and original game... people with lag issues need to learn to test the quality of their burns. Also starfall eliminates any worry of an update, unless you force it to update, and at this point that wont brick you, just cause you to loose the mod. I dont see nintendo ever bricking us intentionally as we own the hardware and it would cause a major PR headache. They have enough trouble just updating without issues to non modded users, let alone if they were to try and intentionally take out any wiis. And that info comes from wiigator from a nintendo source. Oh and clips are nice and all, but can be jostled loose. Look at all the horror storries from other consoles and clips.

I have a chipped wii and a non chipped wii and to be honest i dont see a difference between the chipped one and the non chipped one for speeds or compatability.

As for updating - it wont destroy your wii if you updated with softmod , and someone has posted that the backup channel remains allowing you to still play games , and if all comes to all , you can still downgrade again after an update if needs be - so updating isnt as bad an issues as it used to be - plus Gamma blocks out most updates now anyway.

Every games that i try in the chipped wii now also works with the non chipped wii after the master coders on this site get their hands on the installers. The lads are amazing with getting fixes for the problems and at this stage they are way faster at coming up with solutions than the mod chips are.

I would recommend softchipping well above a modchip at this stage - i almost destroyed one wii trying to chip it myself - you really need to know ur soldering to do it and its a bit of a pain - the wiiclip makes it a little easier , but for serious ease go for software.

also the risk of bricking is pretty much gone since Wadder was released. Just always make sure you get WAD files that are fully tested before you install them. Only wad files had the issues , but the wadder app has fixed all of them issues.

Thanks again guys for recommending the zip i put together - it makes all the effort worthwhile

but of course as always - the big thanks goes to everyone who put the efforts into making all these hacks like team tweezers and waninkoko and wiigator and ... the list would go on forever , but you guys know who u are !!

welcome m8, your pack is the best, thanks for it and keep up the good work

by the way ... manhunt 2 is not bad at all...

As good as hard modding sounds, there lies the difficult feat of soldering minuscule points on to the mother board. The slightest mistake and the chip probably won't work.

Hard - Well, it is what it's called. Hard modding. Sure, it has the normal speed and more reliable, etc, but, it is pretty difficult to get the whole business of soldering if you're not the best dancer in this type of class.

Soft - Again, it is what it says. It's pretty easy to do as everything is done mostly on computer. There are con's as well like slower speed as mentioned above (though I highly doubt it's that great of a gap in speed).

Basically, hardmodding consists of more work, but once you finish sculpting, the statue turns our remarkable. Softmodding is quicker and faster. No need to crack the shell of the Wii (you'll have leftover screws), but you do need all that equipment (SD Card, Card Reader, etc.)

Hope I helped. Good luck!

the biggest danger of chipping to me is the possibility of lifting a trace if you have to remove any excess solder... I've seen more consoles killed by lifted traces than anything. (Well with chipping anyway)

I did that with my first wii - one of the traces came right off and i thoght OHH FUCK - i closed it and it still worked so i left it as it was ... im sure something doesnt work but i havent found it just yet thank god

Its now a chipped - non chipped wii - total waste of money , time and effort and involved a lot of cursing, sweating, and confusion.

Well, there is hardly any risk if you let someone do it who does it for his business (or makes money)?
Ohh your wrong there - no one will guarantee a wii chip - they are really hard to do so no one gives guarantees with them.

same thing with the traces happened to me, swapped it at a store (what, it still worked!) and got a professional to do it.

(ps: TBS4 is finally out, check the sig!)

Well if you can admit to a removed trace..... I did the same. unfortunatly the trace i removed was one needed for drive control. Sad thing is this is the first time ive ever fucked anything up soldering. So i have a wii patiently waiting a HD loader to be resurrected. In the meantime its my test system, quick drive swap every so often to test out things.

Speaking of HD loaders... we know there are hospital wii's that load from a HD, i wonder if anyone has thought to search the ninty servers for updates specifically for these wii's as id imagine they would be different and have usb 2.0 enabled.... If thats the case we could incorporate that into our wiis and save some dvd's

Not to mention giving the scene a big kick in the ass. Hello WBMC and unlimited VC games.

Good job on getting version 4 up and running noob ... what chapter of your signature is the link in ?
