Trying to fix my little cousin's system, having some problems diagnosing the fault.

Worked fine for the month he had it, up until a few days ago - The touch screen stops working in certain situations. If I try Mario and Sonic, Lego Indiana Jones (all original carts) or go into the touchscreen configuration, the screen stops working until the system is restarted... however, everything else such as the main system menu, Pictochat, and Mario Kart DS work perfectly fine with the screen. My AK2 doesn't want to work with the touch screen either.

It seems odd... you think if the touch screen was broken, it'd stop working altogether, and if it was a loose ribbon cable it'd flicker between working and not working - not constantly work and not work with the same apps. Any ideas? It's an American DS in the UK, so he'd have to pay a £30 out-of-warranty for repair with Nintendo UK, and I'd like to avoid that.
