Hiya!

So today I picked up a copy of Brunswick bowling for use with tonyhax on my fat PS2. However no matter what I do I get stuck at "Initialising CD". From what I understand, my PS2 should be fine:

All PS2 under 39k are supposed to work with Tonyhax. However all I get is this:
zAHEb1t.jpg

This happens no matter what backup I use. I have tried a backup of PAL Crash:Warped, NTSC Crash:Warped, NTSC Harry Potter and NTSC Spyro. From what I understand, region should not be an issue with tonyhax and even if it were, my PAL backup of Crash:Warped should work still.

My games were written in bin/cue format on two different branded CD-R to rule out the possibility of bad medium but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

I have both the save file and the SPL on my memory card (Obviously since I can boot tonyhax in the first place):

I'm at a loss - I don't understand why it won't boot anything I throw at it. The disc drive is good, since it can read both original PS1 and PS2 games (though I have FMCB+OPL for PS2. Neither PS2 memory card OR hdd was plugged in while trying to boot this).

Does anyone know what else I could try, or if my PS2 is incompatible for some reason? Cheers

I don't know for sure if the burn process is your problem, but may be as I had back on the day a modchip PS2 and took a while until I learned how to burn my own discs the correct way.

All I remember is that I used the "clone CD" software (it works with DVD too, dont worry) and 4x speed. Faster speeds never worked back then, but slower did, so try something if you have spare media.

Oh, and one more thing. PS2 can't read dual layer DVDs.

Oh right. Forgot to mention burn process. I used IMGBurn at slowest speed but sadly the slowest my burner will write is 16x. I could try with cloneCD to see if it makes a difference. I am using just standard CD-R (not RW and I don't believe CD can be DL). Might fix it if I try cloneCD.

if it is has 4 gb capacity is single layer, if it has 8gb it is dual layer. If you brought your DVDs on budget probably they are single layer.

Although it might seem pointless, I'd suggest trying to boot another legit PS1 disk at the bootswap screen. If it loads then it's probably an issue with your burned disks, if it doesn't then it would point to a compatability issue with TonyHax on your model PS2.
It works on my PAL 3900X model (using Cool Boarders 4 as the entry point), but I've only tried import disks so far and not any burned media.

I never thought of doing this lmao. I'll give it a shot in a bit when I get a minute. If it doesn't boot even a legit disc that means my PS2 just won't work with tonyhax right? And if it does then it's definitely something to do with my burning?

So turns out that booting a legit PS1 game works fine using Tonyhax, so I guess that means my PS2 is at least compatible? Guess I'll have to search out a CD-R burner and try some quality medium like Verbatim?

i use some basic cd-r’s from poundland burned at 8x speed and they work fine

though depending where you are you may not have a poundland store nearby
and if you’re not from/in the uk you won’t have a poundland at all

I am in the UK and do have a poundland, heh. Sadly I can't actually get OUT to one. I'm currently trying to make a copy of a legit game I have (I tooooootally definitely owned the games I have tested) to see if a direct copy from a legit game will work and then I know it might be my source and bad dumps or something.

ouch
for me all games i tried work fine

i burned them using my mid 2010 macbook pro (pretty much any old laptop that has a disc drive can burn at 8x speed)

another slight difference is that i use tony hawks pro skater 3 for tonyhax and a ps1 scph 102 though my scph 39002 ps2 works with tonyhax fine with no issues

Like I said, you might want to try an audio CD to make sure it’s not the drive that’s the issue.

Both drives are fine, I burn DVDs all the time without issue (PC drive) and normal games work fine (PS2 drive) so I doubt it's the drive itself.

On a different note, I just borrowed an old laptop and managed to write at 8x using the burner on that, but still no luck, just stuck at Initialising CD.

I've had issues in the past on certain drives where burnt media struggles to be read compared to pressed discs and IIRC older PS2s had different pots(/lasers?) for CDs and DVDs.

Also, a new version of tonyhax has been released, 1.2.3 so it may be worth a shot.

I just finished going through all my legit US/Jpn import disks with Tonyhax on my PS2... there were two that wouldn't boot at all (NTSC-U Xenogears, and NTSC-J Bust a Move, aka Bust a Groove), and one that hangs on a loading screen (NTSC-J Einhander). Just goes to show that even some legit disks are problematic.
I thought it was very strange that Bust a Move wouldn't run when I'd had no problems running it's sequel (which I was never able to do on my modded PS1 due to its modchip detection).

On a side note; I've corrected (for the most part) the resolution issues I was having by running GSM and setting output mode to PS1 NTSC @60hz. While it screws up the browser (making launching my Cool Boarders 4 entrypoint awkward), it sorts out the resolution of any NTSC PS1 game I launch with Tonyhax... with a few exceptions... NTSC-U Vagrant Story has an odd resolution for it's title screen, so you can't see any of the selections, and NTSC-J Dead or Alive seems to line double in game - seemingly an interlace vs progressive issue.

All three games have "EDC: Yes" in the Redump-database.
Coincidence?

You could be on to something, however I'm using legit disks not burned... if it's a version of EDC utilised as a form of copy protection I'm not sure if that would cause the non-booting issues. All three load correctly on my modchipped PS1.
