Being a reboot doesn't mean it's not a prequel. "Reboot" simply means they're completely revamping the franchise.

Star Trek 2009. Bam.

Although technically Star Trek 2009 was an alternate universe past the intro (since Nero's entry into the timeline completely changed everything). Technically it's canon, just not canon in the same universe.

That being said, for another movie parallel, let's take Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Admittedly it's crappy, but it's considered a "reboot" since the franchise has been dormant since The Last Crusade. It's the same storyline and characters.

For video games, Goldeneye 007 (the recent Wii one that was HD ported) follows the same basic storyline as the original game/movie but is completely different in terms of gameplay.

EDIT: Also as previously mentioned, Duke Nukem Forever is the same universe/characters but revamped in terms of gameplay, although the game is still really bad.

People are using the wrong dictionary if they consider kingdom of the crystal skulls a reboot. King of the crystal skulls, may be a restart of the series, with a starting point after the old movies, but no way is it a reboot. A reboot clears all history and restarts over from the beginning ignoring all events in the old timeline and makes a new timeline. Thus reboots cannot be prequels.

I just gave you two other video game examples as "reboots" that completely debunk your definition of a reboot.

A reboot is simply a revamping of a franchise, period. It usually entails a new universe or alternate canon but not always.
