I was watching some youtube videos about how to improve speed of internet on ps4, i currently have a original model ps4 which has 2.4GHZ B/G/N connection which i use with wifi cause i can't use with ethernet. (So please restrain yourself from obviously saying "Use wired connections") But most of the videos say the same thing.

I was wondering if anyone else had tried this same thing, was there actually andy noticable difference?

Also please say what console you have, the original has no 5GHZ AC but the slim and Pro do, so i dunno if it made a difference. (WIFI USERS ONLY!) You may also mention if you do the same on ps3 if you wish to share any improvement notes.

Ok, tested with an EUR Phat PS4, Wifi and it doesn't seem to be that much of a difference.

I tried a few things I found on the internet when I first got my PS4, and none of them worked. As much as it sucks, the PS4's wifi is complete and utter garbage - you're basically forced to either get lucky and hope it works decently or use a wired connection.

Those are Google's DNS, if I recall correctly, which will probably resolve domain names quicker than your provider. I'm not sure if it'll make it go quicker, but it'll be more reliable ish.

the switch to ethernet will make the most difference. Wifi will definitely limit you.

Is that for just the systems with 2.4GHZ wifi or does it include 5GHZ wifi as well?

for both, for tech reasons. DNS just handles translating ip addresses to current human-friendly web addresses (something like that). Google will probably be able to do that work quicker than you internet provider, so it's not a bad thing to switch. If you see a sudden increase of speed from that, your internet provider is really terrible lol

    Warning: Spoilers inside!

Im from UK and in my experience on both the standard and pro editions of the PS4, using a WIFI connection.

The Google DNS makes a massive difference to that of my ISP's (its only for my PS4 that it actually improves things oddly). Also change my MTU to 1499 (its such a small change dont think it makes a difference but is force of habit now when I setup the Wifi connection (I use my PS4 at both mine and a friends house, both experience same results.

I don't usually have an issue with bandwidth or latency/ping (not the fastest but got a 200Mbps download and 20Mbps upload, so have a decent connection and I am the only user).

Using OpenDNS's DNS server was also suggested, not tried it myself.

There is a free program called Namebench
    Code:
    https://code.google.com/archive/p/namebench/
should anyone wants to see if any of the free/Public DNS Servers work better on thier connection than the one provided by their ISP, although its for general purpose internet use and not specific to the the PS.

    Goodluck finding a solution :)

    **Edited to clarify

So since i'm not that smart, does anyone know what the primary DNS and secondary DNS is supposed to do exactly? Also what is MTU for and why is it always set to either 1400 or 1500? I wish i knew this stuff myself so i didn't have to ask, but google doesn't explain it to me so i can understand.

the dns server (which translates human readable url's to ip adresses) providers provide often tend to be slow.
Changing to faster one can significantly increase the reaction times of dns lookups and result in a noticable speedup.

in my case my isp dns is much faster than Google so I use my own.

the best thing you can do really is a get bufferbloatless router and modem

    see bufferbloat.net

you can measure your amount of bloat with http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?nav=2

I'm getting 20~30mbps of download and 1~2mbps of upload on my ps4 through wifi and it plays fine on games such as cod or battlefield...

I'm currently using an statict ip address, opendns's dns and mtu set on 1473. Of course using wifi.

Not sure what bufferbloat is but my setup is good enough for my location, since is considered the best of the tri state area, that even netflix recommends it as optimal for HD video streaming.

Of cours i still think is not having the 5GHZ AC ps4 slim or pro that is causeing the below half download speeds. I can't believe there is actually ps4 sold in 2013 with such a thing, while Xbox one actually try to improve their wifi internet after not shipping first model 360 with no wifi unless using adapter. What the heck is going on with these companies decisions? :wtf:

I still not sure what MTU is for and why is it always either set to 1400 or 1500.

When setting up your internet connetions, do not use easy mode, use custom mode.
    • Select custom instead of easy
    • Select your router
    • Manually insert the information
    • Set ip adress
    • Set default gateway
    • IMPORTANT! Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and Second DNS to 8.8.4.4
    • Set mtu to 1473 manually (Find out more about it by looking at your router info)
    • Do not add proxy server
This was the guides info, if you tried it already and have any difference to share then go ahead. If you didn't get improvements, is fine to just use the default one you had before the change.
