Newer cards labeled r4isdhc.com will not boot with their current kernel if your DS/3DS date is past 2019. They won't permanently stop working though, you can change the date or use YSmenu to get around it.

I also recently found out that there's a modified r4i-sdhc.com kernel that works on these cards. However, it won't boot games such as Pokemon Black(2) or White (2). So, there's really no advantage to use it over YSMenu (unless you really like the way that kernel looks).

I'm curious as to why they would implement such a thing.

It is all about money. It will make people who don't know about the trap to think that the flashcart has failed and for you to consider buying a new flashcart, preferably theirs again. That way you continually pay them. There is enough people who are oblivious of this trap to continually pay for a new flashcart from them to keep them in business for several years.

AFAIK there were companies who did that to a few of their products in order to keep people buying.

If you mean midkid's patch, strangely I couldn't boot anything when I tried it.

So I set my date to 2020 and get the time bomb error.

I have downloaded ysmenu which I can boot by running it as if it was a game from the default kernel. How do I get it boot directly to ysmenu? Is it just a case of renaming files?
