actually there are different firmware update sizes.

The file on the game disc seems to have 4 different pup files in it. You can see the pup sizes here :

Sony already released two firmware updates (1.05 and 1.051) in two different type : Full firmware replacement (RECOVERY, 800MB) or update (UPDATE, 300MB).
The full one will delete all your profiles and files. it's like console reset.

You can still update from USB, like PS3.
