THQ: 3DS will "really combat piracy"
Oh Really Now...

As reported on gamesindustry.biz, the 3DS will have new measures for combating piracy. The information below is a quote of the article taken directly from DCEMU.

Article said:
THQ has claimed that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS will best the piracy problems that have dogged the DS range to date.

Executive VP of global publishing Ian Curran told website CVG that what most excited him about the new handheld was that "there's technology built in that device to really combat piracy."

Nintendo "know they've been hurt across the world, and they believe the 3DS has got technology that can stop that."

He argued that rampant use of copied game tech such as the notorious R4 cartridge had "made it almost impossible to shift any significant volume" of THQ games, but that the new copy protection systems in the 3DS presented "the opportunity for people to invest more in product development and bring more 3DS products to market."

Piracy on portable consoles (also including the PSP) is estimated to have cost the industry $41.5 billion over the last five years, although that figure was based on the unproven presumption that every illegal download of a game equates directly to a lost sale.

Unfortunately Curran was unable or unwilling to describe just how the 3DS would combat piracy. "I actually asked Nintendo to explain the technology and they said it's very difficult to do so because it's so sophisticated," he claimed.

Um, actually, the terrible quality is the reason it's "almost impossible to shift any significant volume" of THQ games.

yep, piracy is just a convenient scapegoat for these companies

hahaha

ITS EFFECTIVE

hmm they wont say

Maybe they have put small chinese people inside them and if they see a flashcard go it they whack you with a Newspaper and say
"YOU BAD" and call the police on you

thats effective

Lets see, we all know that the PS3 has not yet been hacked and that THQ publish games to that platform.
So all they need to do is check if they actually manage to sell all the shovelware games. xD

Perhaps THQ should actually publish a good game for the DS instead of crap movie/cartoon-based tie-in products marketed to retarded parents who buy crap for their children.

if anything, no one is pirating their games

Thanks to the PS3 a lot of people will think a lot of things.

But the 3DS is not going to be a PS3, and will need to earn it's 'not crackable' rep on it's own.

I think one of the best things nintendo can do to prevent piracy and to also help compete with the iphone and itouch market is to both bring virtual console games to the 3DS and to make some kind of app market for the 3DS. One problem with the older handhelds is that every game cost 20-35 bucks so just having a few games could run you some serious money. With an ipod, you can have a hundred games for 20 bucks, with the free and cheap games available. It is hard or impossible to beat priacy altogether(and I wouldn't want them to personally), but also giving programmers and talented hackers a venue where they can sell their software will seriously decrease and in many respects make piracy less necessary.

The more they claim for it to be unhackable, the more the hackers will try to hack it. So in the end, it will probably still work out in our favor.

What about the PS3?

You cant compare a ds to a ps3 though. Microsdhc's are cheap, blank blurays aren't. Plus ps3 games are big. This is why people arent really interested in hacking the ps3
