can anyone tell me if playing a backup on wiigator 0.3 hurts the laser inside it?

It will not damage the laser very much. There will be more strian as it is designed to read pressed games, not burnt games. You will not notice any significant decrease in quality though. It should last for at least 4 years or so.

Why would it... It read the disc at HALF speed, why the !@$# would it hurt the laser. For the record, neither does burning at a high/low speed, watching a DVD through MPlayer, or de-gyrating the Wii's laser dingus.

maybe not that one...
I mean. it doesnt hurt the laser, but its like watching a 90 minute loading screen.
With a game, the wii reads the disc and stores the required parts into its memory, and reads off disc when necessary.
When watching a movie, it is constantly reading the disc.

Also the Wii was designed to be able to play DVD movies. Its just Nintendo decided to remove the function theoretically but the code is still in there. It was unlocked and the program "DVDX" puts it back to use.

Myth, Backups kill lasers, Movies kill Lasers, LEAVE IT OUT, Drives are strong, the drive will END up with PROBLEMS, if your on the wii 24/7

Yes, CoD does constantly read the disc.
The laser dying isn't an immediate effect. Nor is it a short term effect.
It's something that will take long to happen.
If the drive had a (hypothetical) 10 year life span, than if you were to only read dvd's on it, it might be reduced to 8 or 9 years.

i can confirm only hitting it with a hammer degrades the laser.

The pots are not being adjusted so the laser is not under anymore strain than when doing its normal thing but like all consoles why add extra wear and tear to watch DVD's when a dedicated player is so cheap all your doing is adding to the mileage thus decreasing the lasers lifespan its like having your light-bulbs on in the day.

Well you're right there Wiisel, but I won't be spending RM100 plus here, just won't work out with my minimal allowance and my way of spending (Yea, a teen, Malaysia ain't got jobs for teen).

I'd say it would kill the Wii lasers but that will be long after the Wii is dead anyway.
