PS1/2 Thinking of getting a PS3 (couple question)

Okay, so my questions are

1. Will I be able to plug an HDMI to DVI to my monitor for display, and use the composite cables for the sound on my speakers?
2. How would it look on an 1680x1050 monitor? I heard it will go down to 720p (1280x720), but will it like black bars, etc.
3. I heard the slims can't install linux on it, is that true?

I plan on playing this on my monitor because I heard it's better than an SDTV. My monitor only supports VGA and DVI.

1) Yes you can. I used to use the same setup.
2) You can select 1080p and it will "downscale" to '1050p'. Should look great, but the aspect ratio WILL be a little off because 1680x1050 is a 16:10 AR vs 1920x1080 which is 16:9.
3) That is true, the slims can NOT install Linux.
