Flashbacks do overlap with friendship but I was thinking of the whole rest of the cast standing on the sidelines (because for whatever plot contrivance they can't, you know, jump in and help) and making intense faces at the fighters. The more intense, the more powerful the Friendship Power becomes. But the protagonist can't unleash the full force of the Friendship Beam until his love interest screams his name through tears/rose petals/feathers/lens flare.
