Hundred percent, yes. But the direction of most corporations these days is to maximise these overblown executive salaries at the expense of everything else - employees' jobs, salaries, benefits, workplace safety, let alone other shit like the environment - so it's at least an improvement to make allowances in the other direction. Pushes you to the bottom of the hit list, I guess.

While you are correct and the meme is very accurate i would say that as the CEO that failure was in large part his own fault so while he did the right thing he also caused the issue at hand so it was kinda the only shot he had at not getting shot.
