Well, the first steam engine was invented thousands of years ago. They were just laking a few other stuff to make an actual steam engine as we know them today (like valves/pistons).
Now imagine, going back in old eras, where they knew some basic physics stuff (they already knew that earth was not flat and
that the Earth was orbiting around the sun, unlike some peoples today...) and give them just some extra basic knowledge, they could reach today's technologies so much quicker. Let's say you travel back to year 1 AD and give them plans to make steam engines, hydro-dam, combustion engine, etc, maybe they'd have a timeline where internet was global thing by year 200 AD.

Well, the first steam engine was invented thousands of years ago. They were just lacking a few other stuff to make an actual steam engine as we know them today (like valves/pistons).
They had both pistons and valves, what they didn't have was a decent alloy that would take the necessary pressures without exploding.

They needed the secret of steel.
