So this topic is for people on the fence for emuNAND, but want to know all the downsides that come with it.
I for example have all the games I want as legal cartridges, but emuNAND would be a convenient way to have everything in one place digitally.

Question is, is it worth it (at the moment) for people like me, who don´t want to loose any convenience they have with newest sysNAND, because they don´t have that much desire for free gamez?

  • (on N3DS) currently no emuNAND support for FW >9.5.
(fixed with upcoming rxTools and Reinand releases)
  • (on N3DS) 3D bug in rxMode, which shows you two offset images instead of a 3D image after coldboot.
(temporary fixable by closing and opening the lid)
  • no DS Support (no flashcarts).
(apparently works on some rxTools Builds, more clarification needed)
  • no DSiWare
(works, when you install to both sysNAND AND emuNAND)
  • no GBA Virtual Console
(works, when you install to both sysNAND AND emuNAND)
  • once sysNAND and emuNAND are unlinked (sysNAND formatted) it is not possible to restore all my data from emuNAND to sysNAND in an easy way.
(Tutorial to do a manual system transfer: click)
  • Dependency on MenuHax to coldboot to sysNAND and also after exiting system settings in emuNAND.
  • Creating an emuNAND partition takes 1GB of space on O3DS and 2GB of space on N3DS.

Thats everything I could think of at the moment.

Please correct me on any mistakes, tell me other downsides (even minor ones) that I can add to the list, discuss ways to overcome them and which ones would be fixable with updates to the CFW/tools.

I want to keep the thread updated, so it´s an easy and convenient way to inform users new to emuNAND.

Thanks in advance for your contribution.

.
If you install it to sysnand and emunand its possible to use dsiware and gba virtual console on linked nands.
Also it could be possible that we wont need to have an emunand in the future, because of arm9loader hax.

Back up any important saves you have on your current emunand, then perform an EmuNAND to EmuNAND system transfer when N3DS gets 10.3+ support to transfer your Mii/Streetpass data over. (Although there's probably another way to do that, but that's probably easier anyway)

... And I think that pretty much covered all the downsides of emunand you pointed out.

Also if your emuNAND is 9.2 or less you could flash your emuNAND to sysNAND.

Great idea for a topic. I'm in the same position as you in that I have the games I want on cart, and am currently deciding whether to go for emunand when I have my hardmod done.

(on N3DS) currently no emuNAND support for FW >9.5 (fixed with upcoming rxTools and Reinand releases).
I didn't know about this upcoming fix. Do you have a link with further information about this? I'm very interested to read more about it.

Both DSi and GBA games work fine on my unlinked N3DS ReiNand EmuNAND. I used BBM to install them on both SysNAND and EmuNAND and don't have any issues. I think you don't even need to install them on SysNAND if your NANDs are still linked.

If your NANDs were linked when you installed it, it flashed it to both, actually.

Just be careful flashing anything to NAND on linked NANDs, because you're also flashing to SysNAND too, and that is very dangerous (bricking) without a hardmod.

the only thing stopping me from downgrading and setting up emunand is 1. backing up save files for 71 digital 3ds games and re downloading them all :( and 2 formating my N3ds and loosing all my mii plaza stuff.

I don't know if the whole downgrading deal causes any trouble (my SysNAND was never above 9.2), but you can inject your SysNAND into your EmuNAND and keep every single save game, downloaded title and Mii Plaza stuff. I didn't lose anything when I set up my EmuNAND.

I'm on the fence too, so I was thinking in unlinking my emunand from my sysnand but formating the emunand instead of the sysnand, this will let me use a fresh emunand to installs newer things there and stay with everything in sysnand but there a downside, all my stuff will be in the sysnand fw 9.2 so I will no be able to connect to the eshop, I don't care about online playing but I do care about eshop access. So is a hard decision to make, someone said above that you can flash your system backup after if you want everything back (on sysnand) but I think is a dangerous step.

So I'm thinking the best choise is to configure the emunand with all your data and format your sysnand (maybe that why people do it that way).

There is a way to back up your sysnand, then later use it as an injected linked emunand with mutiNand tool. That is, if you wish to just try emunand.

Not true. R4igold works fine for me on emunand.

There are some builds of rxTools that seems to run DS carts from emunand.

I really don't see any downsides to having emunand, safer to do your installations on and create a backup of. If anything were to happen just restore the emunand backup, if you fuck something up on sysnand and have no way of restoring sysnand you're screwed until an official release is made to perform a restore on any firmware higher than 9.2

If it's gonna get fixed then it's not an issue :^)
I don't know very many people who use 3D anyways.
My sister's been able to launch into DS mode from RX-E, and you can play DSi Ware by installing the DSi Ware titles to sysNAND as well as emuNAND.
You can also play GBA VC by installing them to both NANDs.
There's not much of a reason to restore everything anyways. Or at least not yet.
