I think you could technically consider them emoji. emoji is a Japanese word meaning, emotion character. a smile would be displaying an emotion, would it not?
From a linguistic standpoint, I suppose, but emoji is specifically a standard set of smilies.

ah, they're referring to picture based on that link. I just assumed emo was referring to emotion, since ji can be character by itself like Kanji (chinese character).

The Word emoji, indeed comes from Japanese but means e-moji, where moji is "Character - letter - symbol". "emotion" is not in the name. is more like e-mail, business, etc.

You're all wrong.
emoji comes from prefix "e" and japanese word "moji".
Together means: "Character / Writing of Edo era"
