Switch 2 Screen Slower Than OG Switch

Aren't most handheld screens like this? I wouldn't say that's a very smart comparison.

It's like saying the Switch 2 is slower than the best -if any- computer gaming setup out there. No objectivity on doing this.

The Switch 2 is worse than any of the other handhelds. Monitors Unboxed did a follow up with more screens to compare...

You can clearly see how Switch 2 is worse than all the other LCD based handhelds, with the ROG Ally X being much better with its Fast-IPS panel, and then the Steam Deck OLED blowing them all away (the Switch OLED would be just as good).

How bad is it compared to the PSP's screen?

That had a lot of ghosting in my opinion

It's twice as fast as the OG PSP screen. But that doesn't sound so great somehow after all these years.

How can it be slower if it said to have a 120hz screen
Refresh rate and response time isn’t the same thing.
Think of it like a fast brain but with a slow body. Even though you want to move your arm, when the instruction is sent, it takes a long time until the arm actually starts moving.

If they opted for a fast 60hz screen, it would feel more responsive than a 120hz slow screen.
But fluidity will be better on the 120

It's really a shame the Switch 2 is such an overpriced ( just look at the real MRSP in Japan) cheaply made toy for children. I'm an adult, I can afford whatever if i'm going to sink my time into it. I wish they would at least have the sense to make a proper "premium" model for adults. One with a proper screen, battery and ergonomics at the least. I'd drop $1000 to not have to deal with the poor quality of this toy. It should be standard sure, but now we have no option at all.

Until Hori makes some grips or something the Switch 2 is borderline unusable for me in handheld mode

Is the pixel response time worse than Switch 1? Yes, but, how many among us really noticed it until it was pointed out through slow motion footage? Some folks are more susceptible to it under normal use than others, just as some are more susceptible to the flickering of OLED displays. Even the Switch OLED has an issue when it comes to vertical scrolling, which most won't see until the footage is slowed down. The problem we have here isn't that it exists. It's that the idea is engrained into people's minds, that now that they can see it outside of normal use, it will affect their enjoyment during normal use. It's throwing everything else under the bus, like how the screen is 1080p, can do HDR (however you may feel about that), is 120hz, has VRR via G-Sync, etc.

And for all we know, the reason the response time is bad is because it was chosen to be that way for the purpose of battery life. It could be that it isn't simply not using Overdrive, but that it's purposefully undervolted from normal voltage. Outside of changing batteries, the Switch 2 can run Mario Kart World with an average of 7.8W power consumption when portable, and that's pretty insane. Compare that to all these other portable PCs with large battery capacities, and still getting in the same realm of battery life. Steam Deck, for instance, pushes the APU to its 15W limit when the GPU is maxed out, insomuch that the CPU has to throttle down from the GPU getting priority over the juice.

If it is undervolted, then that's something that can be fixed with a FW update. They could make it an option in the settings. A toggle where folks can either keep it as-is, or supply it with a little more voltage at the expense of some battery life. How much? I dunno. Personally, even with this lower response time, I still find the screen much better than the Switch 1 screen.

It’s a good thing a racing game is the launch title. The slow screen just adds some extra motion blur. In this sense, racing games are more forgiving.
When games starts using mouse mode, more people will notice.

The problem is that if you're not someone that is sensitive to pixel response time then this will feel like a big fuss over nothing, whereas someone who is very sensitive will find the ghosting so bad it's unplayable.

I'm someone who concentrates mostly on just the character in the middle of the screen so apparently that makes me not notice it as much as someone who sees the whole screen.
