Hi everyone,

My name is Nath and I am posting from the Netherlands. I just bought a Switch 1 for my kids and myself. A friend of mine told me I could get my Switch converted so I could play all games without going to the store first, if you know what I mean. As someone on a budget that would be amazing. I'd love to play Zelda myself and get Donkey Kong and such for the kids.

I've found 2 locals who can do the converting for me, but, they told me I need to "get the software myself and they can put it in" but refuse to tell me what to get and where to get it because they are not allowed to do so apparently? I have 0 knowledge on this subject and even after scrolling trough gbatemp, I have no idea what I'm after. Is there anyone who can tell me, really really specifically, like you're speaking to a 5 year old, what I should be getting and where I can get it?

I've even tried ChatGPT but they're no help either.

Please help me out, it would be very appreciated!

*harhar* Real pirates put more work into their adventure to run *cough* games they legally bought *cough*.

You probably have an unpatched Switch, for which you need a jig and USB cable to set everything up.
This is so trivial that most modchip installers don't want to ask money for setting it up.
If you don't install any games you don't own, you are still in the legal boundaries of the Dutch law.
Using a hacked Switch for homebrew apps is allowed.
Once you install sigpatches and games you don't own, then you are technically breaking the law.
First check if your Switch is patched or unpatched :
https://ismyswitchpatched.com/
If it is patched, you need a modchip like the picofly.
Don't go trying to use a patched with software hacks because you'll brick your Switch.
You need a modchip.

If it is not patched, then you can inject a payload to get full access to your Switch.
You need a jig to put your Switch in the rcm mode.
The rcm mode is some sort of special recovery boot mode that Nintendo forgot to disable.
Without a jig, you can't put it in rcm mode.
So buy one from amazon, aliexpress, 3dprint one.
Or be like macGuyver and use a paperclip (absolutely not recommended).

You need to set up some files on your SD card (like Hekate, Atmosphere ).
Search for the HATS package which contains all files in a single installer.
If you have an unpatched Swith, just follow this guide :
https://switch.hacks.guide/user_guide/getting_started.html

When you turn on the Switch with the jig inserted in the right joycon slot, the Switch waits for a payload to be injected over the USB port.
You can use a dedicated injector like an RCMLoader or some other clone.
You can also use a PC (TegraRcmGUI) , Mac (CrystalRCM) , Android phone (Rekado) .
Note that on the PC you need to have the right USB drivers installed and an Android phone needs to have USB-OTG enabled.
Most apps will tell you that the Switch is in RCM mode and will ask you what to inject.
If you boot into the official firmware/OS, then you'r doing something wrong (bad USB cable, charge-only cable, missing drivers, not OTG) or in the worst case, the USB port on the Switch needs to be fixed.
With the official OS, you also should be able to make a connector over USB, so as long as that doesn't work either,
injecting a payload also will not work.

The Switch is just waiting for you to inject the payload.
If all goes well, you boot into Hekate where you further have to set up everything.
Just follow the manual.

As long as your Switch is not in AutoRCM mode, you need the jig when you want to restart the Switch after powering it off.
When you set it in AutoRCM mode, you don't need the jig anymore but you need to inject the payload if you turned off you Switch completely.
When the Switch is in AutoRCM mode, you will only see a black screen so don't panic.

Main work is to create an emummc (a copy of the Switch internal memory) so you can be a pirate on the emummc (Custom FirmWare) but a saint on your original internal memory (Official FirmWare).Goingonine with the custom firmware with pirated games will get you a ban from which your Switch will never recover.
So if you intent to play online games, buy them with your OFW.
Never go online or update directly online with your CFW,
You will get banned and Nintendo Ninjas know where your house lives.

The only thing to note is that some things have changed with sigpatches.
Pirates love sigpatches because they enable them to play games they grabbed some somewhere on the internet and install them on their own Switch.
Without sigpatches, Nintendo sees that the game is not legit and it will show you an error when you do try to start the game.
I heard that from a friend. Not that I know anything about such things as I legally own all 3 games I have.

In the past you needed to put sigpatches in the Hekate bootloader folder and the atmosphere folder.
Whenever there was a new firmware update, those patches also needed to be created for that firmware.
That method still works.
But last year or so, someone made a piece of software that could generate those patches so you would always have the latest ones. More details here :

People use Tinfoil or GoldLeaf or Awoo to install their *cough* you know what *cough*.
Just try whatever works for you.
Try recent posts as things sometimes get updated and don't work anymore as described.

It is not allowed to post links to pirate sites so don't ask for those here.
Search the internet but be aware of virusses , malware and people trying to scam you on the dark side of the internet.
Real pirates never enter their credit card numbers, don't complete silly tasks to unlock something or install some unknown EXE to speed up their downloads.
Real pirates have a good virusscanner and adblocker installed.
