Alright, I'll be getting Swap Magic 3.8, and I was wondering if I can get any advice from anybody who uses this? (What I need to start and whatnot)

I dunno where I read (probably wrong) but they used 60GB PAL and 80GB (I'm guessing PAL too?)
Had a compat list, etc.

20GB and 60GB have (virtually) full compatibility
Old 80GB with software emulation will work for many games too.

The problem with Swap Magic is that you need to gut your PS3 and void the warranty when you can just get a PS2 for cheap.

I have 60GB and still bought a PS2 one year after getting PS3 because I didn't want to cut open my PS3 for whatever reason (save for pirating PS3 games if the day ever comes?)

Yes you do, lol.

Otherwise

QUOTEONLY WORK with the first generation PS3 with Emotion Engine built-in:

How to play PS2 ISO's on PS3 via USBAdvance (aka USBLD)

What you need:

* Swap Magic 3.6+/3.8 (Purchase here or here)
* Launch PS3 (20/60gb) - NTSC/Japanese (Must have emotion engine, only launch PS3's had this) [Note there have been reports that this method works on NTSC BC consoles] .
* Flash Drive (PSP in USB MODE will also work).

1. Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack.
2. Extract the contents of the folder USBADVANCE to the root of your flash drive/PSP.
3. Boot up SWAPMAGIC and once loaded into the menu screen, press UP (on D-Pad)+L2 on your PS3 controller to browse through your flash drive. If you are unable to view your flash drive, then it is not compatible (use another one).
4. Copy the BADATA-SYSTEM folder and USBLD_01.ELF file to your Virtual Memory Card (on PS3).
5. Go inside BADATA-SYSTEM folder and cut/move the Pictures and SWAPMAGIC folder to ROOT the Virtual Memory Card
.
6. Remove your FLASH DRIVE, press the button and quit the game and go back to XMB and launch swap magic.
7. At this point you should move the Playstation 2 ISO's of your choice to your external HDD/flash drive. You need to have them properly formmated and copied over via USBExtreme (is included in file you downloaded above). If you are not sure how to do this, there is a quick tutorial that guides you through the process. Make sure your USB/Flash drive is plugged into your PS3.
8. Once booted, browse and launch USBLD_01.ELF
9. And there you have it, if you followed this tutorial properly you should see the Playstation 2 ISO's there and just click and launch

How to copy PS2 ISO's to a external USB/flash drive

1. Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack. (Ignore if you downloaded it in last tutorial), and extract the folder USB EXtreme to you desktop.
2. Plug in your USB HDD (or Flash drive)
3. Put a PS2 game into your disc drive (if the game is already on your computer you can mount it with Alcohol 120)
4. Open up the USB EXTREME tool on your compute.
5. Select your Disc Drive the PS2 game is in, Media type (most are DVD's) and your USB/Flash drive.
6. Now you can name the game and hit start.
7. There you have it a properly copied game to your HDD, just pop it in your PS3 and follow step 8 from above.

F.A.Q
Q: Does this work on PAL PS3's?
A: No, support for PAL is expected to be released soon. (does not work on ANY pal systems at the moment).

Q: But my PS3 is backwards compatible, why doesn't this work?
A: It does not work with SOFTWARE EMULATION (which is what your PS3 most likely has). If its not a "launch unit" it will NOT WORK RIGHT NOW.

Q: How do I know if my unit is a LAUNCH UNIT?
A: Check model number on back of PS3, if it is a launch unit it will be one of the follow: CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD

Q: Does this work on NTSC PS3's?
A: We have had reports that some people got this working on NTSC consoles with EE (backwards compatibility).

Q: What PS3's can use this method of PS3's?
A: Basically USA and Japenese Launch Consoles (20/60gb) that contain the Emotion Engine (PS3 Models CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD)

Q: Will it work on a PS3 with no Emotion Engine?
A: No not yet.

Q: Does this boot from PS3 internal HDD?
A: No you need a external.

Q: What version of SWAP MAGIC do I need?
A: 3.6+ or 3.8

Q: Where can I buy Swap Magic?
A: Here and here.

Q: Swap Magic cant see my USB for somereason
A: It is probably not compatible, buy another one.

How would you get the disk out to "Swap" it?

I would think that USBExtreme might work. I used it on my slim PS2 to load games from a USB external hard drive. I just loaded the USBExtreme disk and it loaded the games, no need for messing with the memory card.

Being that I have a launch 60gb PS3, I can just use a external HDD to load PS2 backups. Thanks everybody

Ah, I vaguely remember being able to use my PSP as an external HDD. One of the reasons I got 16GB MSPD but I totally forgot, I've been busy recently and the information must have been flushed.

I'll try it over the summer too.

nope, all you need is a few files a memory card or psp or external hard drive and you are good to go, only problem with usb advance is it's compatibility is like 10% or something.

mad old thread i know, but i just got a ps3 and decided to give this a shot, got it to work but one question, is it supposed to lag like all hell during cutscenes? only tried it for 2 games, Megaman Anniversary Collection and KH1, and both were lagging in the opening cutscene, and megaman just froze afterwards, any advice? or am i going to have to deal with it?

Well if you are running from USB Yes it would be normal to get lag because it will only run at USB 1.1 speed. You need to be running the game from network to experience no (or much less )lag.

Hey I have an 80gb and I'm sure it has a broadband engine and it does play ps2 and ps1 games. It's practically the same as the 60gb, can somebody please tell me how to play PS2 games from a Ext.HDD. I'ts BS if it's impossible. I already JB my PS3 console and I have both swap magic disc. Please help or lead me to the answer and It would be highly appreciated.

Does anyone know if the USBloader method still works on 3.55 cfw?
I am aware of the need to have launch PS3 and i do own one, thanks for any information

Wow what a thread of confused information.

Original Poster, you're fine.

Copy the usbadvance elf to the ps3, run via swapmagic boot disc.

Make sure the usb driver is working as well, so the Ps3 reads it.

Copy your games to the external hard drive with the correct software.

Run the .elf, it should show you the games you've loaded, and hopefully they work (not all do, or are REALLY slow).

Wynd

I imagined this would work easier , rename USBLD.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF , place in in the root of a stick in the SWAPMAGIC folder . Then insert the disc and the program should be automatically loaded. Does it not work like that , you need to launch it from the virtual memory card ?

Ok..OPL ..i agree but how do i launch it ? Do i copy it to the virtual mc on ps3 or launch it from the root of and usb stick ?
