This 3ds with red cart has worked for years. Last night when i go to load the Nintendo ds profile it gives me an error about an error has occurred and the software will now restart.

This happens every single time. I do not have the blue cart as the exploit im running uses the red cart only. Im on firmware 4.0.2-9u.

Is there a way to fix this error so that I can play my games again?

Gateway is obsolete.
First of all use this tool to extract all Gateway saves you care about since they only work with Gateway: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zf4fkbe8fwen7ee/GWSE.rar?dl=0
Then follow http://3ds.hacks.guide/ to get set up with current CFW.
Then you can convert your .3ds games to cia if you like by using 3dsconv (https://github.com/ihaveamac/3dsconv/releases)
A boot9.bin or boot9_prot.bin dump is needed to use 3dsconv, you can make one by holding Start+Select when powering on the 3DS after you have installed CFW, or you can download games in .cia format off the internet, but converting is much faster and only takes a few seconds. Just drag & drop the .3ds files one by one (rename any .3dz to .3ds) onto the exe when you have the boot9 file in the same directory.
And finally after installing the games you can restore the saves you backed up before (instructions in archive)

Edit: Can't back up the saves if you can't get GW working again. I guess we'll worry about that later, you can get GW working again as a dual boot once you are set up with CFW. So for now just follow the guide.
