Hacking Stop CDN downloading.

To add to my post to Don above about updating games, those that don't play online and don't want to be banned will probably go to GameStop, buy a used game, update, and return.

The CDN is what gives you content and stuff. If you go to the eShop and buy/download a game normally, that's making a request to the CDN to make it give you content.

But there's the stuff the switch sends first so the CDN (or according to the reddit post @gameboy linked, something that comes before it) knows that "oh this thing is allowed to have content".

That's downloading from the CDN. That's fine!


But if we send the switch's stuff from another device, like our computer, and get the content that way, it's bad.

Don't know if I would agree with that assessment.

Yes the CDN is just a download server.

You present it a key (or a ticket to use the proper parlance) and it sends you data. The 3ds flavour of it was not terribly well done and shared the key between all games/consoles so if one dumped it then everybody could use it, the switch appears to have gone to per device keys.

Ethically speaking then as far as downloading from your PC should you own the game in question* I would be fine with that. Would probably break Nintendo's terms of service and I would be fine with then swinging a banhammer too.

If you don't own the game being downloaded then you are doing things that might be questioned.

*the cart vs downloaded version could be tricky -- you are still using their bandwidth they might not have reasonably expected to have to allocate to you. On the flip side should you download it from a straight ROM server (or not share on p2p if you are using one of those methods) I consider that fine.

So, downloading from the freeshop on 3ds will make Nintendo ban your switch (if the 3ds and the switch have the same Nintendo account)?

No, because the 3DS has universally signed certificates on all devices, so downloading from the CDN NIntendo does not know what NNID is downloading what content from freeshop because it could be anyones NNID downloading to any 3DS. The Switch is different because each console has it's own certificate needed to access eShop, so once you use your certificate to download content that is not available to your console (haven't purchased it yet), then you can get flagged by Nintendo and banned in the future.

Lol. At least you'll get game updates, if you do. Between their horrendous online, lack of basic functions, and their totalitarian-ness, it doesn't appear you'll be missing out on much.
