StepMania is a free and open source, cross-platform rhythm game. It supports common key-based rhythm game formats (including 4-panel and 5-panel dance games among others), as well as Switch controllers (joycons recommended for their individual buttons), keyboard and dance pad controllers (ex: Gamecube ones with adapter). It is customizable with user-made add-ons such as themes, and provides an integrated editor for creating your own simfiles.

Getting Started

Grabbing Binaries

You can download the latest release here on github: https://github.com/retronx-team/stepmania-nx/releases.
Extract the archive in the /switch folder on your SD Card. Then, run the game from the hbmenu using hbl.
Be sure to run it as an app, it won't work as an applet (you may get a black screen and/or crashes).

Song Installation

You can install songs by simply putting them in a subfolder of your Songs-folder in the directory you installed Stepmania to. You can find for example a few packs of songs on Stepmania Online http://stepmaniaonline.net/index.php?page=downloads or Otaku's Dream Website here : http://www.otakusdream.com/downloads/.

Crashes on latest HOS / latest Atmo...

Thats why I dislike switch homebrew.
It randomly breaks on new hos / atmo release, has little backwards compatibility and is generally unstable af.
last time I checked, it was pretty laggy anyway and I also had crashes..so it was unusable.
Stepmania runs great on my old potato x86 atom windows tablet.

Anyone know how to fix this issue? I'm guessing someone needs to recompile with updated binaries?
Im using latest build from github without issues (hos 15.0.1 ams 1.4.1). Using legacy theme helps a lot, less lag and stuttering on menus and playing songs with no overclock. Btw if anyone wants to use "pump" mode you have to edit keymaps.ini on save folder, just change/add [dance] to [pump] and save the file.

theres PSPRevolution. you can run that on vita through adrenaline. works great
i remember psprevolution! it was what got me into stepmania way back in 2010 but psprevolution didn’t age very well and is pretty unstable with about of 99% of songs i have with the majority of them crashing in the menus

on top of that it’s ui isn’t that customisable meaning i can’t use the same themes and such i use on stepmania 5 (yeah they won’t support it by default but had the ui been more customisable recreations would have been an option) and i usually play with a x4 note speed but psprevolution can’t go higher than x2 speed so that’s a dealbreaker for me

on top of the psp stepmania stuff there was also pspmania which was a full blown port of stepmania 3.9 but this port is even more of a mess with long load times and more crashes and more incompatibility with themes and other content

however for portable stepmania now i use stepmania 5.3 project outfox (steam playtest version) on the steam deck which gives me the portable stepmania i’ve always wanted where as back then when i posted my original post the steam deck didn’t exist yet so it was a distant dream at the time

thanks for coming to my ted talk
