I guess I've been out of the PC gaming loop for too long ...
Do companies actually MAKE Linux builds of commercial games ... or is this just hoping that the idea catches on?

A handful of companies did port games to linux, steam have been pushing opengl (and given it is more weaning companies off directX that takes the effort that is no bad thing*) and a few companies seem to appreciate having something mostly working on WINE then kind of.
As others said quite a few of the smaller indie type games quite often come with support for such things right out of the box too.

*I reckon I could argue openGL is as good as directX video for the most part even if drivers are not all the way there on occasions. Sound (which directx handles very well) on linux when spread across ALSA, OSS and a few other choice pieces of nonsense is a different matter.

As for the matter at hand it is certainly not bad news although I do not use steam as it does not seem like something I would really want.
