Hopefully it's not like the newer Star Trek movies. They're not bad movies (well, at least the first one wasn't, I haven't watched the second), but they're more along the lines of Star Wars than Star Trek.
Honestly, I liked them because of that. You should really watch Into Darkness, it is a BEAUTIFUL movie, both visually and plot-wise. It also feels more "Star Trek-y" than the first one

It's fine that you enjoy them because of that, but that's the reason I don't like them. The name "Star Trek" creates a certain expectation for me. The newer movie doesn't meet that expectation (though the movies were rarely great in the first place). I don't really have any desire to check out the second one either. At best, it might compare to other Star Trek movies, which I didn't care for a lot of the Star Trek movies in the first place. I generally only watch around five movies a year, I doubt I'm going to waste my time with that one.

While I do agree on the visual aspect of the movie being gorgeous, it was an absolute mess plot-wise. It's like they tried to cram 3 movies into a single one.

I enjoyed Into Darkness. Even paid to see in in theaters in 3D and that's something I rarely do. I really want this new Trek show to have character moments in the same vein as J.J. Trek. Kirk and crew really feel as if they have been through everything together and I enjoy that.

Well they certainly feel like they're going through puberty together.

I wouldn't really call the United Federation of Planets a imperialistic interstellar state but they do like expansion for the sake of more knowledge and the greater good.

I want a back story that exploits the corrupt means by which this "greater good" got in the position it is in in the first place. ;)

Enterprise wasn't bad, though I'd like something more dark and ironic.

Enterprise is my favorite Trek series but I want something closer to home. I want a trek season that spends half its time on Earth with the crew going out on missions every few episodes. I want to see Starfleet brass planning missions and diplomatic talks and all the politics of a future Earth. It's something that I LOVE about Mass Effect. You get to watch the politics play out.

Star Trek is supposed to give us an optimistic outlook on the future.

Would Star Trek 6 be your favorite of the movies?

Sci fi/syfy did a couple of shows this last year in the form of dark matter and killjoys. Both were pretty typical (but not bad when all was said and done) lower budget sci fi and neither got anywhere near something like Pandorum or Event Horizon if you are after the even darker and more twisted stuff but took it further than most. Might be worth having a look at those.

I've meant to watch Pandorum, but have not gotten to it yet. Even Horizon I of course saw in the theater and thought was a breath of fresh air and I especially enjoyed this Fanedit:

Beyond the Black Rainbow is interesting, and also Moon,

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Now that I think of it, what I'd like to see is Star Trek vs The Thing (traditional effects of course).

If you've not see this film, then watch it and not this clip, SPOILERS!!!
