Does anybody know of any 3DS games with Download Play modes which the client 3DS can continue to play standalone, without needing the host around? Obviously, these only last until you quit the app, shut off the 3DS, etc., so I don't mean games you can play indefinitely, just stuff you don't need to be connected to the host console to continue playing. Note that I haven't tested all of these, some I've just found mention of their sharing features online or in the game manuals, sorry if any of these are wrong.

Here's the examples I've found (games in bold I've confirmed myself):
  • BoxBoy (share a demo)
  • Carps & Dragons (share a demo)
  • Cooking Mama 4: Kitchen Magic (share a demo)
  • Darts Up 3D (share the full game)
  • Disney Art Academy (share a demo)
  • Dolly Kanon Dokidoki Tokimeki Himitsu no Ongaku Katsudou Start Desu!! (share a demo)
  • Football Up 3D/Soccer Up 3D (share the full game)
  • Football Up Online/Soccer Up Online (share the full game)
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon/Luigi's Mansion 2 (share a multiplayer mode that multiple clients can play together without the host; a single client can also play solo)
  • Metroid Prime: Federation Force/Blast Ball (share a multiplayer mode that multiple clients can play together without the host; a single client can also play with CPU players)
  • Osawari Tantei: Ozawa Rina - Nameko Rhythm (share a demo)
  • Penguin no Mondai + Bakushou! Roulette Battle!! (share a demo)
  • Rhythm Heaven Megamix/Rhythm Paradise Megamix (barely; share a multiplayer mode that includes solo "training" segment)
  • Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (share a multiplayer mode that multiple clients can play together without the host; a single client can also play against the CPU)
  • Tamagotchi! Seeshun no Dream School (share a demo)

I don't have an answer but iirc the 3ds ram is too small to hold any serious game without seeking data from the host. Only the smallest games could fully fit in memory.

3DS Download Play doesn't run from RAM like it did on GBA single-pak multiplayer or the original DS. The host game literally sends a .cia file to the client console and it gets installed as a hidden title directly to the NAND and runs from there. This means if you're DLPing the same game multiple times in a row, you don't need to redownload the title each time and can jump into the game faster. According to 3dbrew, the title is replaced the next time you Download Play a different game.

I've only looked at BoxBoy and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but extracting those games you can find the .cia files in the romFS of 00000002.app. BoxBoy's demo is ~30 MB and the Luigi's Mansion multiplayer download is ~31 MB, so the limit might be somewhere around there.

EDIT: For bonus points, you can actually re-launch your most recent Download Play title using a homebrew app like FBI. Here's a video of somebody booting up the hidden Luigi's Mansion multiplayer title that was installed the last time they Download Played the game:
