I recently got loadiine gx2 v0.2 working on my 5.4.0 firmware wii u. I have tried out a few games that work:

Super Mario 3D Land
Minecraft
NES Remix

However these two games that I have tested do not work:

Super Smash Bros Wii U (Boots but stuck at black screen)
Pokken Tournament (Does not boot at all, progress bar for loading the .rpx file pops up quick and then disappears).

I have tried two different downloads of Pokken Tournament and get the same results. One of which I know was already pre-unpacked.
Would these errors be chalked up to bad downloads?
Something I did in the set up process?
Do these games not work on 5.4.0?
Do I need to spoof my wii u firmware or do that nudinstaller thing?
What are the common reasons for some games not working while others do?

Let me know if you could help me answer any of these questions :) Thank you!

EDIT: Fixed the e with the apostrophe in the name of pokken tournament to not have the apostrophe but still get similar results. Still looking for suggestions! Thanks!

Pokken tournament works fine for me on 5.3.2 spoofed to 5.5.1 GX2 0.2 latest commit thanks to @Cava I use miimaker mode.

Could be a bad download, but twice.... I dont think so.

I would spoof, and try miimaker mode. Check the wiki too to see if those games need specific things. Pokken doesnt afaik, and I havent tested SSB.

So what is the purpose of spoofing? I seemed to gather that spoofing is required to play real discs online. Is that right? Does it serve another purpose?

Spoofing is permanent and only for the purpose of online play with discs and eShop access. You cannot revert spoofing without IOSU access/exploit. At this time, it is still unknown what will happen if a spoofed console is updated, or attempts to update. With that said, I'm not saying, "Don't spoof." I am, however, saying, "Be cautious and know the risks." Many have had great success, but I personally don't recommend it.

I believe so yes.

I should mention I'm self hosting if that helps you any?
I am self hosting as well!

Noted, I will hold off and look for another solution!

Spoofing is needed with some games because some games require a certain update for it to run. This goes for all hacked consoles.
Back in the day JTAG's couldn't run some new games until I spoofed to proper firmware.
Do you suggest to spoof/think it will solve my issue here?

Okay I'll wait until @KiiWii or someone else weighs in!

What's the issue with spoofing?

I did it and everything works great. I can upload my self host files if you need.

I'm running 5.3.2, GX 2 0.2 mod self hosted with spoof and honestly I haven't downloaded a game that doesn't run yet. (Apart from AC3 = suspected bad dumps)

EDIT: my self host package with HBL 1.1 and GX2 mod http://www.mediafire.com/download/66biudc9w3v3if9/SELF+HOST+HBL+1.1+loadiine+mod.zip

EDIT 2 update the GX 2 with @Cava s latest that I linked above.

Okay, as long as you think this is what makes certain downloaded games work that otherwise wouldn't, I will try this out!

I cant say for sure, but its worth a shot surely!

In my experience, I have very high compatibility, and 99% boot rate.

Is there a specific routine to follow for 5.4.0 like there seems to be for everything? :)

Host a OSDriver that works for you. I tried several before getting ANYTHING to work.

Test builds of loadiine. I tested several, they all worked, the latest added compatibility for more NWF (ninty web framework) eshop games, and all games I have backed up work fine still.
