During the PSX era Sony marketed Crash as their clear cut mascot, and Spyro as a key secondary title. Yet Sony didn't own the rights to Crash or Spyro, Universal did. If I remember correctly Sony and Universal had a publishing agreement which allowed for these two series to remain PSX exclusive.

But eventually the agreement expired. My question is whether or not there were ever any reports of Microsoft attempting to enter a similar agreement with Universal (before the two series became multi platform). This would have allowed Spyro and Crash to become exclusive MS property. Considering how deep the financial resources of MS has been for years, as well as how hot those two franchises were at the time, it seems like a proposition MS should have at least considered.

Also did Sony ever try to buy the rights to the Crash series? Granted I'm sure Sony had a lot of confidence in Naughty Dog to create another hot series, which they did, but letting Crash go multi platform could have hurt some of the momentum Sony had built with the PSone (especially if Sony, during the PS2 era, hadn't been able to keep its awesome third party support intact).

Sony already have a platformer game - LBP. And if they will need more, then they can revive Jak.
Spyro is much cooler then Crash, but now he is a part of Skylanders universe, so I don't see any reboots coming anytime soon.
MS can milk Bonjo, if they ever need new platformer game too.

    what are you confused about?
before they went multiplat, both spyro and crash were strongly connected to sony, I feel like, if microsoft ever spent money on those ips, it would have been to keep them out of the market entirely.

Crash was clearly the PSX mascot. I'm curious as to whether or not Sony made a strong effort to keep that franchise exclusive to the Playstation brand through some sort of extended deal with Universal.

I meant MS attempting to gain exclusive rights to Crash or Spyro when the Sony/Universal agreement ended over a decade ago. Now those two series are unfortunately worth a fraction of what they were back in 2001. Plus FPS' have overtaken platformers as the hot genre.

My key point with the thread is that when MS entered the console business it would have been an amazing coup to enter an agreement to have exclusive rights to Playstation's mascot.

I think both franchises were only contracted for Sony exclusivity for a set number of games, Sony had no issues with letting them go. Pretty sure their "successor" franchises (Jak and Ratchet) did better than them anyway.

I don't think Microsoft wanted to be known entering the console business as "the guy who buys another guy's leftovers". If the games sucked too they'd be left spending way too much money on two useless titles.

Also pretty sure Spyro now is worth way more than Spyro then, Skylanders is a pretty big franchise now.

If there were a separate Spyro game released today do you think it would have the same amount of anticipation as the PSX games did. Spyro, as his own entity, isn't worth a lot in my mind because of how poorly received most of his games were during the PS2 era (plus the platforming genre isn't as hot as it was back in the late 90's-early 2000's).

While I'll admit that playing Spyro on PS1 was fun when it comes to Crash Bandicoot, CB easily takes the crown because the platforming on the CB series is far better and more entertaining though a bit too linear (jump on this, walk/run, hit that and then repeat).

All this time and Sony has not gotten a deal about CB/Spyro it just goes to show that they just don't give a shit, unfortunately.

Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex & Crash Bandicoot: Twinsanity were the last two games of the series which actually had faithful original gameplay whereas Crash Mind Over Mutant is just a hack n' slash brawling game (not what CB was about) but really liked the voice acting of it.

    I forgot
As an original Spyro trilogy lover, I highly doubt a new platformer Spyro released today would do well at all unless Insomniac Games took over development. The later games after the original trilogy were terrible, had terrible reviews, and the whole platformer thing was practically dropped in favor of the figurine thing which has been doing quite well for the series.

Crash games outside of the PS1 are awful. I like to imagine he was replaced by his evolution into Ratchet lol.

MS can "try" to milk Banjo... but I dont think the 360 title did too well. He and Kazooie hold almost no relevance anymore. But I would like to see them prove me wrong.

The first two GBA Crash games are pretty good and Wrath of Cortex is pretty good too.

It was PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. I wouldn't say it's Warped tier but it was pretty good, almost got 100% in that game as a kid.

Does it really matter? Crash Bandicoot became a crashed brand-icoot, and Spyro became "that purple dragon on the front of my Skylanders game."

    Wrong.

You've obviously never played Wrath of Cortex or Twinsanity.

It's not about opinions, if you'd just actually had checked out both you'd know they play alike the classic Crash Bandicoot games.

That's because Crash Bandicoot games have gotten a bad reputation and so they tend to forget the last two were just as good as the ones on PS1.

They were no where near as good, it was just more or less recycled content except it didnt play as good as the ps1 titles
