Gaming Spore: How do I attack?

In Spore I have given my char all of those attack goodies but it gets beaten all the time.

Maybe I am doing something wrong - I thought they auto-attack?

Well, for regular attacks, you just slash over the enemy you want to attack. But no, there's no auto-attack function, at least not that I'm aware of.

You can also take two other creatures with you to help in battle.....(thats how I won most of my battles at the start)

If you press start there's tutorial button. That teaches you some tricks.
