SEGA has announced a new multiplayer online action adventure game called Spiral Knights.

It's being developed by Puzzle Pirates outfit Three Rings and will offer "console-style adventure" in a free-to-play, persistent world.

We're promised "vibrant" graphics, groups of up to four, guilds, crafting and customisation.

The press release doesn't specify, but Spiral Knights looks to be a PC-only game. You can preview Spiral Knights right now from the official website.[/p]

I actually had to search for a valid source here, having heard about the game on Twitter. Naturally, I was intrigued by the name, and it looks to be a fun MMO.

I asked @SEGA on twitter about what platforms it would be on, and while they did not respond, I did recieve a tweet from one person who is of unknown origin (maybe someone who works at SEGA who forgot to log out of their personal Twitter, a beta tester, or a developer. Either way, from her site, she seems to be an MMO nut). @avocadobravado says that the game will run cross-platform Windows, OS/X, and (most importantly) Linux. While it is unknown whether it is a downloadable game or an in-browser game, the fact that it is published by a big-name company and cross-platform implies in-browser. (Although, Three Rings' other game, Puzzle Pirates was written in Java [without using DirectX, etc.], so it was also cross-platform, so this may also be the case here)

Looks very reminiscent of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, no?

Looks pretty good; looking forward to more information! And it looks like a downloadable game, seeing as they say that it's 100% free to play...

There are a ton of cross-platform games on consoles (PS3, 360 anyway).

I'm not sure the state of cross-compatibility on PC/Mac, but Linux usually gets the short end of the stick due to lack of popularity, as well as the popularity of Windows-exclusive libraries such as DirectX (although OpenGL is rising).

This means that the game is either an in-browser game, likely flash, or it is written in an interpreted language, most likely Java, given Three Rings' history.

i think i confused it a bit ,
but when i say cross platform , i was referring to being able to connect with the other side .
eg . playing CoD4 on a server with a Mac + PC .

i know there are loads of crossplatform games that are available on many platforms . it's just , if they could make it so one game , a single server , all platforms . then that'd be awesome .

I've been playing this for a few months actually.
NDA meant I couldn't talk about it though.

It's a fun little game. Kind of Zelda Four Swords like.
I'm sure a lot of people here would like it.

It's a pretty small download too.
And of course, completely free.

It runs on a stamina type thing though. You spend energy to enter and traverse each floor of a dungeon.
Once you run out you basically can't play anymore until the next day when your energy is refilled.
Unless they changed that recently, but I doubt it.

Still, free, small, no reason not to try it.

[EDIT]

Actually, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles might be more accurate, yea.
And I do believe it runs on Java.

Damn it, Zarcon! You're so awesome

But that stamina thing sounds interesting, and would, aside from keeping the game free-to-play, allow us to not dump our entire lives into it.

Yup yup, a lot of F2P games are adopting that kind of system.
Plenty of people complain about it.
"Oh no, I can't waste my life away playing this game 24/7"

I just think it lets you pace yourself and spend time doing other things.
Possibly play other games.

[EDIT]

Yup, just checked, the energy system is still there.
I think it's 10 energy per floor so you can do two full dungeons a day at the moment.
That's a few hours of play each day if you explore the entire map and cut down all the grass if you have Zelda OCD syndrome.

The 360 barely has any cross-platform games. The only two I know of are Phantasy Star Universe and Final Fantasy XI.

Man, you all have a seriously warped definition of cross-platform...

You could say cross-platform multiplayer, or cross-platform online play, and it'd be fine.

But cross-platform on it's own? Hurrr

Yeah, FFCC is what immediately came to mind when I saw the character models. The stamina element you refer to sounds interesting. Might cramp the style of some hardcore MMO gamers in a way similar to FFXIV, but I don't think I'd mind it.

Honestly, though, those sorts of looting fests are kinda played for me. It surprises me a little that SEGA would bother with something like that. I can fully appreciate their interest in the free-to-play market, but why such a tired gameplay concept?

Looks like a more cartoony version of Soma Bringer to me.

I watched the video (I thought there was a 3DS icon next to the thread on the homepage), and I thought it looked amazing, but then I read it was on the PC.

It looks alright for a PC game...
