Hardware Speculation: The 3DS games saves in the system?

All the opportunities have their pros and cons.
If you save them on the SD, it could probably be used for flashcards/haxx/something Nintendo wouldn't like. Also you'd have to take an SDcard with you in addition to the game you are playing, if you were going to play on another 3DS.
Storing them on the NAND gives way for the possibility of two persons sharing a game card but not the save. Which would be awesome, but this could also be implemented in the game itself, like when you're having multiple save files. Also, you wouldn't be able to take your game card and play the game (with your save) on another 3DS. Stupid? Yes.
Storing it in the card itself speaks for itself. That's the way it has been. And the way I like it.

... So this makes it harder to make a 3DS mode flashcart. The 3DS will find out you have the game saves of 30 games that you don't have, and then they will brick you....
It's already been extensively discussed and pretty much concluded that Nintendo WILL NOT brick you for using flashcarts.

They'll brick you when the updates come and it detects it.

where else would it save it? there's probably a way to transfer your save to the sd card also, and if there isn't i wont be buying one as back up saves are the most important thing.
It was expected that they'd be saved in the same place all other previous Nintendo handhelds saved the games on- either a battery backup inside the cartridge (battery backups have been retired about since the GBA was first released). Or on a flash-based storage also inside the cartridge itself. The 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld to NOT save its games onto the cartridge.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way to transfer them. Would be a VERY foolish oversight.

If someone actually bothered to take 10 seconds to read the FAQ on the Nintendo homepage you would have found the answer

Where are game software save data stored?
They are stored on the Nintendo 3DS cartridge. Some games will store additional data on the SD Memory card.

The SD card is used for additional storage beyond the save games. Like game replays or whatever. That's what you see the person manipulating on the video nothing more.

So 3DS save games are stored ON THE CARTRIDGE just like all other Nintendo portable devices have done.

So really it does both. It saves data to both the games and the system. The system save stuff is probably the extra data needed for streetpass so it can do that stuff even without the game in the 3DS.

The only ACTUAL interesting thing from the video (if people would actually watch and read what's going on instead of speculating on what they 'think' is 'apparently' happening in the video), is that certain functions require an 'update' to function. For every screen where apparently 'nothing' is happening is a notification that indicates, that this function will be enabled in a future update, please refer to the Nintendo manual for more details.

The weird thing is that the DSi Data center is disabled until a future update!?!? I get that maybe you won't have so much 3DS data that you need to be cleaning house yet, but surely being able to move DSiWare stuff around should be something we need now, not 'in a future update'. It's not clear to me why this functionality isn't currently available. I suppose it will be included in the 'big' update coming in a few months.

Somewhat odd that some of the data move and save functionality is actually not enabled in the release firmware. Still, if you read the 3DS manual there are still a few glaring omissions that are really annoying

1) You can't run DSiWare off the SD card. So you're still stuck with 'moving data merry-go-round' to play stuff if your 3DS is full, just like on the Wii and DSi. I guess it's easier to pirate or something, but really it's a hugely stupid thing to have to deal with. Nintendo really needs to go back to the drawing board and fix this issue next time.

2) 40 slot limit on DSiWare, 300 limit on 3DS download content and 300 limit on 3DS additional content slots. It's not really clear if the 300 is a shared pool or not.

3) There is no ability to transfer the 3DS data to the SD card. This to me seems like a huge problem. I can see where something like Pokemon 3DS (or whatever they name the 3DS version of this crack cocaine) would have sequels that would give bonuses or transfer pokemons between games. So are you going to be choosing whether you want to play Metroid 3DS, or not playing it so you can keep your Pokemon data? With 300 slots maybe this isn't going to be a huge issue?

Yeah... no... That would actually be very illegal in every western country and would be considered cyber terrorism. Accidental bricking of a system due to illegal modifications (think original DS systems with flashme when mario kart DS came out) wouldn't be nintendo's fault... But intentional detection and system destruction WOULD be very much illegal. Why do you think Sony hasn't carpet bombed all the hacked PS3's that get on PSN? It's been made quite obvious that Sony can detect them (warning e-mails and banned consoles) but it doesn't brick them because they would have a class action lawsuit against them and the CEOs would face terrorism charges.

Terrorism? Really? we're resorting to such words to describe things we don't like even if it has nothing to do with terrorism? Amazing! I didn't get soy milk with my coffee! Terrorism I say! Let's just blame Islam while we're at it.

They could in theory carpet bomb every PS3. At least in Europe there's probably a few CONSUMER protection laws they might be violating by doing so. In America there certainly aren't many consumer laws that would protect you from this. Most likely an ambulance chaser would file a civil suit instead and go that way. There really isn't any law forbidding a manufacturer from destroying your product remotely as long as you're not harmed in the process. You could of course argue that you have been 'harmed' because you can't play Pokemon anymore.

Now not to say that the negative publicity wouldn't be catastrophic. I'm sure a few AG's might get in on the action, though what laws they'd be enacting would be interesting. But 'terrorism' isn't one of them that's for sure.

If you're going to use hyperbole, at least try to use something remotely related.

That sucks. I preferred it when the system saved to the cartridge. Rather than bringing the entire system someplace, I could just bring the cartridge. Hopefully there is an easy way to transfer save files on to a new system and perhaps a way to backup save files.

Edit: I should have read through the entire thread first. Ignore all of the above.

Where's your sauce? I demand a SAUCE!

The sauce is from speculation. It's amazing how people just latch on to an idea and run with it.
Also this topic server it's purpose long ago, it was proven that the 3DS save data is saved to the game card and not the system and that the data on the system is whatever is needed for streetpass. It's now gone down a path waaaaaaaaay off topic relating to rumors.

The facts are we don't have anything yet. Nintendo hasn't said anything, and it's only speculation of gaming blogs. And actually all the articles I read were just listing off the current rumors going around so still... no proof. We'll know once the updates start coming, but as of yet there has only been a grand total of one 3DS update for Japanese 3DSs. If you are worried then just do what I am doing. If you can keep an older DS around to play your cards. I still have my Lite so I can play all my retail GBA games, and my DSi isn't going anywhere until after I can get it's stuff on the 3DS, then it'll probably be my full time Ackard 2i holder lol.

There might be a possibility of another "SAVE GAME HACK"

The only way that would work is via DSiWare. DSiWare allows you to save off your game+save in an encrypted format. This is how the previous Sudoku hack worked.

As I have stated previously it is IMPOSSIBLE to move save game data from your 3DS to the SD card. The manual clearly states this is not possible. Heck if you own a 3DS right now, the function to even manage DSiWare and 3DS data is disabled and will 'be made available in a future update'.

I don't think this correct. Otherwise that when you format System it doesn't delete savefiles.

In my opinion savegames saves on carts. Since.

I have my Splinter Cell 3D with my Savefile (On cart?), i formatted the 3DS and the save-file was still there.

But... The Firmware was still the same (Latest One). So Two Options:

1: Game saves on Cartidge
2: Game saves somewhere on the console that it's not affected by formats

Have anyone tryed playing same game with same cartidge in different consoles?
