Homebrew Sonic Chronicles problem... not related to the save game issues

I've been having issues with Sonic Chronicles, but it isn't due to the numerous "Save data can't be accessed" things that other people have been running into. Mine is a bit different, in Chapter 2 when you reach the swamp (or whatever it is) just after you first meet Big the Cat, my game blacks out on me. I can faintly hear the music still. Anyone got any ideas? Or do I just have a botched ROM?

I'm using R4 but the one I got was pre-patched.

Sorry if this has been responded to a billion times. It's just really been frustrating me.

Possibly a fragmentation issue?

Try copying the entire contents of your flashcart to the computer, formatting the microSD, then copying everything back. That will remove any fragmentation on the card. See if that works. DO NOT attempt to just use a defragmenter on it, that can ruin your microSD. Use the copy, format, copy method.
