Misc Some SpotPass questions

Hi. I've never used SpotPass so I have some questions about it:

1) SP only works when the 3DS is in sleep mode, right? I simply put my 3DS in sleep mode with wireless on and wait for it to download stuff?

2) After I enable SP in a game that supports it, how do I get it to download content? Do I have to have the cart in the 3DS and put it in sleep mode? Or it doesn't matter if its cart isn't in it?

3) Disabling automatic downloads via SP in Settings makes it so that the 3DS won't download of system updates and free eShop apps such as YouTube by itself, right? Does it also disallow games from downloading content via SP?
