Yes, that would be a good solution wouldnt it? But i should have specified, by damaged i meant the games are completely unreadable. (When in a PS1 the disk spins as if i put in a CDRW, very slow spin, then stop) I admit a while back i was careless with my games, left them out of cases on the floor, etc...

Your solution does seem viable but the disks, as i said are completely unreadable and even though a swap means the original is in there for like 10seconds, in the long run that can have a bad effect on the laser lens.

If your original games are so badly damaged that you can't even read the tocs, which only take a couple seconds, normally, then you might as well throw them away, as they are useless. Also consider that reading burned copies (on CD-Rs) is hard on the laser (harder than reading factory pressed originals). And you're using an old optical device to read them, probably 10 years or older, depending on your model of PlayStation.

I also bought one of those devices similar to your smart cartridge (mine was called PS Hacker, probably made in China). It worked, but was very much a hit or miss thing, thanks to those differing TOC issues. I quickly switched to a modchip, and never looked back. Modchips were easy to install. No need for a special screwdriver. Just a few solder points (about 7 or 6). Get one of the later modchip (stealth model to avoid detection from anti-modchip games like Spyro 3 or Dino Crisis), and you should be good. Although even a standard normal modchip would work, as there were patches for all the anti-modchip games available online (scene was very active on the PSX). As long as you still can find them online.

When making backups of any CD based Game for older Systems, only use JVC, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim DataLifePlus AZO or MAM-A Gold CD-Rs.
Make sure the Verbatim have the AZO logo.
JVC, Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim have a Blue Recording surface which have a greater reflect surface an will increase the lifespan of your laser.
MAM-A Gold have same or greater reflect surface when compared to press discs.

Tomb Raider 1 as the most Audio track I think.
(I don't remember Tomb Raider 3 though).

Do you have to swap after some time ?
It's a special device to read TOC then swap disc?

My PS1 is a first day (SCPH100x) and I can swap without any device.
I only need to swap between disc checking and Toc reading.
boot -> disc checking if it's a PS1 disc -> Read toc -> Show PS logo in white background -> another PS logo in black background (disc spin is slower, often users swap here but it's bad) -> Boot game
The TOC is read before the very first Logo. (the one showing even if you don't place a disc in drive), so you need a very good timing to swap it at the Red arrow. (it's a very short time range).

But if you need a device to swap, I guess you really need a big TOC game.

Does this work on scph-5501?

disc swapping without a modchip worked only on the first batch of the first serial numbers.
Sony silently fixed it without editing the serial number.
So, first batch of SCPH 1000 (JP)/1001(US)/1002 (PAL) only.
later SCPH1002 are not compatible. I don't know if 1000/1001 had a silent update too.
