You can use any USB HDD and any SD card, but some brands are prfered over others. If you have one currently, you will be able to use that. Backups are stored on a different type of filesystem than windows files, so you will need to seperate whatever storage you are using into 2 partitions. Keep in mind though that games are usually around 2-4 GB, so a small crad will work, but only for small games.

And not all HDDs are over $100... I got a 500GB one for $87!

If your going to use USB Loader I would recommend getting a portable Hard drive, either USB or mains powered.
I would forget about buying an SD card for running games as they are far more expensive. You can pickup a 120-320gb hd on ebay for $30-$70 delivered. It's not a lot of money for the benefits. If you buy a 500-1TB drive of course it would be expensive but unless you intend putting 500 games on it. Buy one with a min of 120gb this should hold between 50-60 games depending on games.

Buy a drive thats compatible. here is a compat list

You will also need some other files installed on your Wii along with the homebrew channel

No you don't need an HDD to use an HDD loader.

It depends what you want to put on it. consider an average game to take up about 3 gigs or so and multiply that by however many games you think you would want to put on your hdd then get an appropriately sized HDD. If you want to use the HDD for other things as well you could get a bigger drive and partition a portion of it that you want to use for your wii games and use the other partition for your other storage needs. There's a lot of HDD's that work with it. I personally use this old Fantom 250 GB drive I had before. Just check the wiki of compatibility of HDD's to make sure the one you wanna get works.
