Hacking So how exactly do slot-2 carts work?

I'm thinking about getting a new cart and I figure I might as well get a slot-2 to play GBA games.

Depends. What Slot-2 are you getting.

If you want use Slot2 cart for playing NDS games you must install modded firmware for DS called flashme or use it with slot1 device called passme. Most of Slot2 flashcarts requires patching of nds/gba rom images before putting on sd/cf/whatever cart too.
