Lets say I find a 3ds I like and want to upgrade it.... to Firmware 7.1... Can i use a game on sky3ds to upgrade it to only 7.1 and not 9.4?

Its a 6.1

I think Pokemon X/Y will get you to 6.1, but why do you want that firmware specifically?

Im getting it second hand. it has 6.1. I was looking for advice. I was thinking of going up to 7.1... but it looks like the only thing I can do is stay on 6.1.. Upgrade to 8.1 with sky3ds and Super Smash Bros...

So it would be in my best interest... to upgrade it from 6.1 to 7.1.. IF this Sky3ds "fanboy" would like to try Gateway in the future right :)

First off, you aren't a fanboy if you purchase and judge things based on their own merits. That title is typically reserved for people who buy one thing, and actively discourage others of buying the competition's version of it. Fanatic brand loyalty is a prerequisite.

Second, Gateway 3DS is said to be functional with firmware 7.0 to 9.2. They even claim that they are working on even lower firmwares for yet more compatibility.

Upgrading to 8.1 would do nothing that would prevent you from using Sky3DS or the alleged compatibility upgrade for Gateway. I have no idea why you specifically want 7.1.

Im admittedly new to all of this. I wanted to keep it as low as I could incase I wanted to format it and not be required to update the firmware. I didnt know if it started with 7.1 or 7.2. I would have no problem going to 8.1. I wasnt planning on using this one for Sky. I planned to keep my 3ds Xl 9.4 for my sky and this regular 3ds for my DSTWO, Gateway, Cubic Ninja...basically experiment with this thing.

The format update starts being required at 7.0. You could wait a bit to see if Gateway supports 6.X on the exploit release, and simply update afterwards if it isn't

and just use Super Smash to get up to 8.1? if so, great. Ill just wait. :)

I mailed gateway for asking 6.2 fw and they said they will include with upcoming update. I can screenshot if you want.

ill just wait then. I still have to learn all this stuff and it seems complicated. I dont like to do things on the fly. Like to know what im doing before I do it. I honestly dont know what you guys mean by Emunand... sysnand... backing up... restoring.. how to pick which one..... im sure its overwhelming at first.

Sysnand is is the firmware Nintendo makes: Don't modify it.
Emunand is a fake firmware that the Gateway team makes that looks like the firmware Nintendo makes: Only available on 4.X sysnand so far.
Nand backup backs up sysnand in case something goes horribly wrong.
Nand restore restores the sysnand, but it's not easy to do, and it's practically impossible without the backup.

so I could potentially make a sysnand back up of my 6.1..... does this mean I can upgrade to 8.1... and go back down to 6.1...?
Also.. when you say "horribly wrong".. worst case scenario would be bricking it... what else could happen?

You can only restore a NAND backup that you previously made from your own console. A backup from another 3DS will not work.
You need to perform a physical mod to your 3DS in order to restore a NAND backup.
Something going horribly wrong could also mean accidentaly updating to a FW that does not have support. Perhaps.
