Hardware should i get a PSP?

I notice that most commercial PSP games are massive (some over 1GB). Does that mean you'd typically only have one or two games on the memory stick at a time, or is there some other way of storing/loading games (e.g. USB harddrive?)

Well, you can rip the games but you'll lose stuff like videos and other things. Also I think CSO format is the compressed form of ISOs so they take up less space than ISOs, so you can use CSOs and save up some space.

If you're tempted to get one I'd say get one! The PSP is not as bad as some want you to believe, but only if you're going to install a custom firmware. If you've already got a PS2 a lot of the commercial games aren't worth your attention but if not it's even better. A bigger memory stick is also a must have. I'm currently on a 1GB stick but it's really too small--getting a 4GB one soon.

To those who have both a PSP and NDS, do you tend to use your psp more, or your NDS?
I use my DS way more.

there also is a method of streaming games over USB from a computer.

I have never heard about this... Can you elaborate on this a bit more?

It's a nice feature but it defeats the portable aspect imo. I've never done it myself because my PC lacks USB 2.0 support.

@Gaisuto: It's called 'usbhostfs'.

Is it just me or is the biggest con that the PSP is all but dead?
The release list is quite bare and there hasn't been a great deal release recently either.
I'm not saying its a bad time to get one, I am getting one tomorrow in fact, but the future doesn't look that bright at the moment.

the psp is pretty much dead.

if you want portable emulation wait for GameParks "Codename: Craiginator" portable It may be pricey, but its specs blow the psp out of the water. Plus it will have two decent analog sticks. Allegedly PSX emulation should be "easy" and N64 is also a very strong possibility.

It also has a better screen than both versions of PSP

PSP has many astounding games. It's the GameCube of handhelds. Has great new releases often, yet gets heavily bashed by fanboys. There's a ton worth trying. Don't trust anyone who might say otherwise, as such claims are outright lies.

Mega Man Powered Up
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles
Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
Burnout Legends
Tekken Dark Resurrection
Tales of the World Radiant Mythology
Power Stone Collection
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007, 2008

A PSP disc has more than 5 times the storage space of Nintendo's recently-debuted 256MB cart type for DS. The web browser (newer firmware) and audio/video playback on PSP are built-in, no separate purchase needed. Slim PSP systems can do video out as well, unlike any official DS product.

I see the PSP as the handheld Dreamcast. Lots of underrated games, easy to pirate and its a homebrew goldmine. Yeah shame about the controls and the nub is awful but you get use to it. The retro stuff publishers release are great too.

You got a good point legendofphil. I did expect somehow that with christmas around the corner there would be released something really worth downloading playing but it's as dry as the whole year. Except for maybe God of War: Chains of Olymp (due in March 2008 *yarn*) I don't know which major hit will make it to the PSP.
Anyways since I currently own only a 1GB memstick I've got a huge backlog (actually not that huge, but it's big enough) of games to check out when I get a bigger one.

I am still playing GTA VCS, GTA LCS and Disgea on my Psp so I am not that bothered about new releases since these games are so much fun and totally huge. I would recommend buying a Psp Slim because the control pad and screen are much better. Emulation on the Psp is also excellent with pretty much perfect Ps1, full speed GBA and the list is really too long to mention. I also have a DS Lite but hardly use it in comparisom.

Mega Man Powered Up ---> Remake.
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X ---> Remake.
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles ---> Remake of Rondo of Blood and port of Castlevania: SotN.
Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories ---> Feels like a stripped down version of GTA III to me...
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops ---> Original and one of the best on the PSP right now.
Burnout Legends ---> Compilation of past Burnout games...so...port.
Tekken Dark Resurrection ---> One of the best ports on the PSP hands down.
Tales of the World Radiant Mythology ---> Good but very repetitive.
Power Stone Collection ---> Port.
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007, 2008 ---> Stripped down port.

This brings me back to my original point. The best games on the PSP are originals (except for Tekken: DR). Way too many ports in that list alone.

Well i must say im on my 3rd PSP*got a slim now* And my 3rd DS. Sold my first to DSs because there was not enough games for me and silly me did not know of flashcarts. A friend of mine bought a m3 for his DS and i got hooked and sadly just recently got my 3rd DS. As for the PSP the first one was great could play snes games and everything. @nd one not so much. Could use it for the net big whoop. Traded it for a 60 gig ipod because thats all i used it for was music. But now that ive learned all this about PSP hacking and what not i hopped back on the band wagon and bought a PSP slim. This time around im keeping my DS and PSP.

i got a psp because the ds breaks too easily. like the cable that attach to the top LCD is made out of paper so the cable tears apart when the hinge cracks. also i'm more into graphics and psp has that. i don't like the idea of two screens. it's harder for me to play games.

Maybe you should get a DS Phat then. I still have mine, and man it is one of the most sturdy handheld I've owned.
