I'm assuming the 3DS has this. Sensor controlled would be a lot better than having to manually enable/disable it (though both features SHOULD be available). But yes, it does help in the long run. At least in my experience.
It already has a sensor/s, the built in cams. Just like on mac book pros it would use the camera as a passive detector. I see this being a really possibility in the design/trendy type of thing, its probably not needed though. The light produced by both of the screens should allow the user to see where the start/select/home keys are.

Meh, I don't like playing in the dark anyways. Ruins your eye sight even more. :]
Untrue. Even reading in the dark will only tire your eyes. That's where the myth came from. You strain your eyes and can't see as well for a bit. And even that doesn't apply here, because you don't have to strain your eyes out to see a backlit screen.
Sorry that's wrong.

Because the room is dark, your pupils will open more to allow more light in. In you then have a small bright light source, more of that will be allowed through the pupil than is good for you.

Take driving, when driving in the dark the headlights of cars coming towards you can sometime hurt your eyes. View those same headlights during the day and you hardly notice them, thats because your pupil are more closed.

If you have used a camera, it's known as over exposure.
You sure about that? It's definitly true that reading in the dark can do no permanant damage to eyesight. The headlights is a poor example, because those cause a brief and isolated flash of light in your field of vision, giving your eyes no time to adjust. When using a lit screen, it takes up much of your field of vision. Surely your pupils would contract after a moment using the backlit device in the dark. And anyway, when playing in the dark, most use the minimal brightness setting.

I'd be interested to know if your claims are actually true, though. You have any links?

For people who are worried about the backlit buttons ruining battery life, its just a couple LED's most likely and take very little to power.

I honestly think the entire 3ds is a bad Idea.
Don't buy it? You can just turn off the 3D part using the slider anyways.
More on-topic, I was always under the impression that the 3DS shown there was a bad model made by someone at EA

.

then what's the point? Might as well be DS 2.
Because it's a more clever name than DS2? It will have new hardware and software? It pretty much is the successor to the DS? The 3D feature isn't the only new thing about the system you know...

And are people actually against this feature? Shouldn't this just be one of those "don't care" features that has little to no effect on other features of a product?

It`s a good idea but I have to experience it to see if it doesn`t distract me... But I`m also pretty sure, that this eventually will be optional, because there is absolutely no need for this in daytime and Nintendo knows that!

Oh man ifi this was true then bring on all the 'How to modify the 3DS button backlights with cool new colours!!!' threads

It's the angle/ lighting of the photo. It's very clear in that photo they aren't backlit.

I expect better from Gaydrian...
As was made clear on the OP its a computer generated image so the angle and lighting don't come into it. I only posted it (with a rumour tag) as I thought it would be something people would want to discuss either in a positive way or a negative, which they are.

Its what the forums are about, I don't really give a shit about this topic or about some others I've posted, they're just there for others to talk about.

QUOTE(mangaTom @ Sep 24 2010, 09:07 AM) Well actually, I like the idea of having back-lit buttons though I don't play on dark not well-lit places anymore. It's one of the reasons for my astigmatism.
I must be mistaken or something but wasn't there some sort of rumour about a light sensor on this so the brightness of the screen could adjust according to whatever lighting conditions?

Nice feature if true, even if it turns out to be unlikely. I also picked up on the slider label that looked particularly bright as well though.

That's like saying "I have a PS3 and I play it on a standard-definition TV. What's the point? I might as well have a PS2." (Or replace PS3/PS2 with Xbox 360/Xbox respectively.) It's not just another DS revision, it's a new console entirely, with backward compatibility.

maybe its fluorescent to a certain extent cuz i think backlit would be overkill unless thts what they are planning... 3D screens with backlit up = huge battery (including time to charge and usage)
if true, it would seem tht 3ds has many more features tht would not be known till nov 22

P.S - I heard from the doctor's show tht reading in the dark doesnt spoil yer eyes nor does watching TV from close range
"But according to most ophthalmologists, while reading in the dark might strain your eyes and give you a headache, the notion that it can cause lasting damage is wrong." [1]
the whole comes from this "When you look at an object for any length of time your eye muscles are working, the longer you focus on the object the harder the eye muscles have to work. Therefore, when you watch TV without looking away from the screen it makes your eyes tired" [2]

hope tht helps... i think its hereditary (the spectacles and all)

This should be really good if it's true(though I don't expect it to happen). My eyes were really banged up that it hurts playing in the dark especially lights off.

Maybe I'm just an exceptional person because I've never had a problem finding buttons or the d pad in the dark. Then again it could be a superfluous option.
