I recently upgraded from an Netgear n300 to a Netgear WNDR3400
While it stopped dropping connections, my download speeds seem to drop from 300-500kb/s to 10-150kb/s

Most likely there are ports that need to be opened on your router to allow the programs full access again. Look for what ports are being used by the program you are using and then go in to your routers settings and open those ports.

I don't know what downloads your getting but if they are p2p then you definitely should try logging into your router. You might want to turn on upnp if you don't know the ports to forward as most downloaders support it now.

Here is the port forwarding page:http://screenshots.portforward.com/Netgear/WNDR3400/Port_Forwarding_Port_Triggering.htm
