Seems WiiU is netplay compatible with PS3 (both being PPC)

It also means savestates are compatible between both which is nice I guess.

Does it load properly?

Savestates are always compatible.
I'm using one savegame for Mario Bros 3 (NES) which I continue on PC, Wii U or my Smartphone whenever I want.

I can't get the online updater for the ps3 to work. I want to download assets but its not letting me.

You will be able to download assets in 1.7.0, and other download features as well.

Not sure yet if the core updater for PS3 will be ready in time for 1.7.0. Maybe, maybe not, depends on how much effort it is.
