Checking up on a dictionary will take you forever to learn as well as it won't be very accurate translation. Just take some basic Japanese class(es).

You know, it really doesn't strike me as that big a chore to do. I know, apparently it is, but from where I sit (and that's in a rather uncomfy chair with my experience with coding and the like limited to adding action replay codes to my games) it doesn't seem like it should be so hard.

I have no clue, so correct me if I'm wrong, but would there be some way to just use an instant translator? I know it would be a sloppy translation, but surely it would do?

Like a file in the actual game which you can switch to .eng from .jap ?

Isn't that how the language files work?

if you have no experience in romhacking at all, then there was no point of you in bumping this.
