This is definitely the same for me, the volume is too low. I think that in a noisy environment, it might prove problematic, but at the same time, I found the quality to be really good, just low.

No problems here with my earphones (Sony MDR-EX700), in fact i don't think i would be able to comfortably play with the volume over 90%, gets a bit too loud for me after that stage.

I don't have my closed headphones available to test with those, bit in my experience I would need an small amplifier with most portable devices to use those at reasonable volumes.

First pair is white, secound pair is black, just ask Amazon... ^^

They're both comfortable, even after wearing them for hours, so...

Ok so I got very low volume with my inner ear Sony earphones, but when I used my JVC inner ear earphones, the sound is definitely louder, not by very much but there was a significant difference. I will dig up some other earphones/headphones to check out the difference.

not sure about impedance but it can output a max of 20000khz

FFS, DO THE KNOWLEDGE FIRST

QUOTEhttp://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/headphones.html
(...) low impedance headphones will sound louder when plugged in devices with low output voltages such as portable CD players, etc. In reality, because of the limited power available from portable players, headsets for portable use should have a maximum impedance of 64 ohms (...)

So it seems 3DS is not doing good job amplifying the output and you need low impedance headphones for the loudness level to be satisfactory... or maybe a pair of In-Ear monitors would be sufficient ?
