Reddit is blocking The Internet Archive from indexing its posts

Reddit is putting in measures to prevent The Internet Archive from scraping its content and backing it up. Reddit officials say this new change is a result of AI scrapers being able to parse through The Wayback Machine's content, even when Reddit blocks them from scraping their own site. Currently, Reddit allows AI to be trained off of its data, but only through paid access, such as its deal with Google in 2024. There's further concern from Reddit's side, as they also believe that The Internet Archive should better respect privacy and not host content that users choose to remove, such as deleted comments.

The new changes have already gone out, and for now, The Wayback Machine can only preserve the front page of Reddit, and not specific subreddits or user profiles.

I should ask — has anybody else found this method drastically less useful than it was a year ago? Now, no matter how I re-word it, I only find the same Reddit thread over and over. And it’s not necessarily useful; it is commonly many years old and unanswered. It feels as though I am //the only person in the world// who has ever asked this question, or maybe one of 3 people, and it has never been answered. Is it just me feeling this way?
You're not alone.
A month ago I went to r/HardwareFix to ask about troubleshooting a Tablet that had correct voltages across the board but wouldn't turn on. Instead of replies I got downvoted.

THEN I ASKE CHATGPT and the dude literally helped me fix the same tablet in less than a day.
The Chat bot told me "sounds like a corrupted Firmware problem, download this, install thus, do this to this precise pin in the NAND, then reflash this and it should work" and indeed ChatGPT totally saved the Tablet.
Today I went for a power cord extension, and got $50 left in change.
Was looking for GB cartridges, but ended up finding these tablets.
- SONY SGPT11MX/S: Screen not broken, but definitely scratched. Don't have to proprietary power cable... so untested. $20 MXN.

- TechPad: Found this one in $30
It doesn't turn on, but accepts voltage and RAM and CPU gets warm. I tested the display with a spare tablet board and it fricking works, I tested a spare display with this tablet's motherboard and wont turn on. I'm currently testing with multimeter to find what's wrong, could use components from spare boards to fix this. It has HDMI, Micro SD, and 2GB RAM, 1GHz processor. If can fix, it'll be RetroArch + Drastic tablet.

Looks promising, board kinda works, just no display. Unless it's set in "show in HDMI instead of tablet display" but we'll see depending on my Multimeter findings.

When my skills at hardware doesn't fix my issue, I rely in ChatGPT because it always provide the correct tools and download links to fix Software/Firmware issues.

When it comes to Hardware, my skills are pretty decent at fixing and diagnosing, but software-wise I'm nearly illiterate.

I very much rather use ChatGPT for troubleshooting than asking in fucking Reddit and don't get a reply AT ALL and be stuck searching for very specific information about very specific problems.

And here is another slippery slope. If Reddit can do it, why not ever other site? No more back ups of anything on the internet.
I think Reddit is only motivated by $$ now that it is a publicly traded company, congrats to them, they have joined the ranks of pure capitalism!
Anyone have a good Reddit alternative handy they would llike to share?

Was Reddit ever good though?
I always get "feed" murican bullshit and stupid propaganda + retarded content about k-poop, furries, anime, india, Twitter screenshots and lots of the same fucking repost across different subreddits by unattended children on the internet.

So... what you're asking for sounds a lot like X.

used to be able to look up sites to stream all kinds of sports but they put the kibosh on that too...

I always like how when you click on a reddit link in a search engine, it would make you log in first, then take you to a completely different page than what you clicked on after it logs you in. Great programming.

They do have a hell of a database though.

In my mind this is a good news, because Reddit is a very big hole of crap and A.I. is not learning good and effective things there. So, thanks to Reddit for helping making A.I. better.

Reddit has ceased being the useful resource by adding its name to the end of a google search. Most posts I find like that are just some jackwagon replying to just search google.

The rest of reddit:
  • One person spamming the same link to any sub that will accept it trying to karma farm so you see it 8 times in 25 posts
  • people brigading the dumbest crap you could think of
  • Posts that don't belong in the sub you see them in
  • Reposts of tiktoks complete with godawful music that doesn't need to be played over the original video's audio
  • Circlejerking in an echo chamber
  • Perpetualizing all kinds of misinformation
  • Virtue signaling
  • Telling posters they need to dump/divorce their significant other

Makes me wonder if they could collab with the Internet Archive so we still get to have pages saved despite the attempts to prevent it from happening.

That would be some Galactic Brain planning for sure.

You just summarised about 99% of the entire Internet.
Any community and/or Social Media platform will have to deal with the same problem at some point.
No one is immune from Human Stupidity.

I am particularly upset by dedicated subreddits being overloaded with neophytes’ posts!

By which I mean — dedicated subs for game consoles are mostly full of people saying “Look what I found!” or “Look what just got here today!” — and it’s just a photo of the damn console, or maybe a special edition of it. Just yesterday I saw a guy post that he’s WAITING for his 3DS to get there in the mail. Is that really what you need to tell a bunch of nameless strangers whom you don’t even try to get to know personally anyway? I mean what is the point of saying that in such a forum??? Get some friends or a therapist or something, damn dude. Nobody knows you, so nobody cares that you’re gonna get a 3DS — we’re trying to discuss what that system can do, not merely observing the fact that it exists. Jesus.

The subreddit for Wii modding is always just full of people showing off console scans that have no bad blocks (all green). It’s like, who gives a f, this affects literally nothing and it is the earliest part of the Wii modding process. Must this truly be the state of the esoteric hobby, to litter it with noobs who just post that they’re happy to be here? It’s much harder to accumulate knowledge that way. It severely limits the ability for the subreddit to be useful.

The kids doing this need to stick to Discord — but then the Discorders who post useful knowledge need to come out from Discord and post it to the forums!

Idk. Maybe I’m yelling at clouds here. Lol.

Reddit is nice for fixing stuff, or trying to solve an issue, anything beyond that, NOPE. It's an echo chamber.

Reddit has jannies that wanted to be hall monitors as kids, and got rejected. Their jannies protest/strike(anyone remember Reddit subs going dark for x amount of hours?) from a few years ago was funny.

YouTube is being banned completely for under 16s, ID will be needed to use YouTube in about 2 months in Australia (home)
you really think that will stop kids using it? unless YT, X and china tok makes it so you have to sign up with a cc as proof of age it won't!

someone don't like the truth! hit a bit close to home did I GOOD because we'll see what it's like in 5-10 years than we'll continue this discussion :rofl2:

I get the feeling you yell at the kids playing on your lawn? LOL. I do find reddit to be almost useless for just passing time, some of the posts are just... like described above.

What about people putting up videos on utube of them UNPACKING shit they got? Who wants to watch that?
or people filling up their fridge with Hungryroot shit? Get a life. And I digress...

Nothing really substantial to archive anyway since about 2017. Now it's mainly filled with bots forum sliding and getting people to argue about political propaganda. Last post worth archiving was EA getting dunked on and downvoted to oblivion while simultaneously getting gilded (to keep the EA's response from disappearing while the downvotes continued).
