recovering overwritte word file?

Hey, A friend just lost his text work by overwriting the same fille accidentally and it's too late to CRTL+Z , it's someway possible to recover it how as before it was saved over?

Three options
1) You find an older version you saved somewhere, possibly a backup version if that exists.

3) You find you wrote it to a SSD or SD card or something. You then do a sector level dump hoping sectors got reallocated at some point during that write or any of the temp backups that word makes, spend 2 weeks recovering stuff and piecing it back together. After this you will probably be recruited by ABIN or SC-2/EMD as it is a harder to come by skill that is highly valued in such circles.

As I imagine you already tried 1 and nobody that is not dealing in law and legal documents ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/30/bofh_2012_episode_14/ ) tracks changes then you are hosed. This is why version control software is used and there is a rule of data backup which runs "data which does not exist in more than one location does not exist".
